Hi,

My roommate, who as it turns out is an idiot, went in search of a software crack on the internet on my computer. When I came back to my computer there was an empty pop-up window on my screen. I closed the window by clicking on the X, which was shortly followed by a pop-up warning from a "anti-virus" program that I do not use nor had I ever seen before. The "anti-virus" appeared to be scanning in this pop-up window, so I closed it as well. I looked in the toolbar where i noticed that there was an icon that I had never seen before, which I assumed to be related. I tried to close it but there was no way to close it from the toolbar. I tried to open the Windows Task Manager, however it would not open. At this point I disabled my wireless connection, and rebooted. Once rebooted, I started Malwarebytes Anti-Malware which turned up trojans and tracking cookies. Then I ran AVG's scanner and found more trojans and cookies... followed by SUPER Anti-Spyware and Ad-Aware with similar results (the last trojan I found was called SHeur3.AHOG). I tried reconnecting to the internet to find help on the subject, but when I clicked on a link it would redirect me to some random page. I disabled the connection again and started researching on a rental computer. I have completed your required steps to post, although I did have difficulty with the gmer.exe scan. The first two times I started gmer, after about three hours, the computer would re-boot mid scan. The third time, after starting the scan before I went to bed, I woke up in the morning to the BSOD saying PFN_LIST_CORRUPT. The fourth attempt, I downloaded the gmer from your secondary link/source and it seemed to finish without trouble. And, during this whole process, after each restart/reboot an error box would come up in windows saying: Error loading C:\WINDOWS\ndavrst.dll - The specified module could not be found. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

============= FINISH: 9:02:22.60 ===============

Also, I didn't realize the relevance until after reading other users posts but here are a few more symptoms:

1) Before I noticed anything wrong with my computer, the router crashed and reset itself (kicked my roommate off his computer's internet connection)
2) After I figured out something was wrong with my computer, I turned off the router for a while but did not manually reset it
3) I noticed that there were 4 separate svchost.exe running, one of which was taking up 98-99% of the cpu
4) Firefox wouldn't let me connect to the internet - it said "The proxy server is refusing connections..."
5) I configured the Firefox proxy to auto-detect settings (this let me get back on to the internet but this is when the link redirection started to happen, and even though the internet worked my anti-virus programs wouldn't update)
6) Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool will not run at all (the normal box that comes up just flickers on then closes)
7) I have since reset the router's network name and password (verizon fios service and router)

I hope this helps...
Ryan

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
    • The application window will appear
    • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers

    • Click OK
    • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
      • DDS.txt
      • Attach.txt
    • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
    • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
    • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.
QUOTE
Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.
QUOTE
Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

I have read posts like this before on BC regarding backdoor trojans. After reading this I have changed all of my passwords and notified financial institutions (this was @ 3 weeks ago and have not used the infected computer for ANYTHING since then). This is my only computer and I can't use other computers for financial purposes. If this were your computer, would you continue to try and fix this or reformat?

Hello

That is a question you have to answer. I gave you the information in the link above about what this virus normaly does and what it could do. you have to decide at what you would lose if somebody did get in and what you would lose if you did do a format.

I did read all of the information that you have provided, and even though I do not hold other people's confidential information on the infected computer I think that a re-format is in order. I do however have a few questions...

1. Can the back-up I created be trusted? (I have software and past work that is essential to my profession in the back-up)
2. How do I go about re-formatting the infected computer? (manufacturer's specs for re-formatting?)
3. Can the computer be trusted with my financial information after a re-format?

I was going to install newer versions of software anyway, so final decision (even after my PM, sorry by the way for the misdirect); I will reformat just to make sure that everything is kosher. I have a Dell XPS 410. On a side note, how do I go about scanning my back-up file (typical anti-malware... avg, malwarebytes...)?

Yes, found the re-installation DVD of Windows XP. I will follow the steps from the link you posted. How do I go about scanning the back-up file?
