I have an XP SP3 PC that is infected with this pest. It seems to be hijacking the search engines and directing them to "Gala" or other sites. Any help you can offer in attacking this would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you in advance for any help you may provide.

Gala can be a tricky one to remove. First, let's make sure that the PC is clean.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Comfix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

There's a rootkit in those logs which Combofix has now removed.

Please rerun Combofix with a script, as below

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the box below into it:

QUOTE
Folder::
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\SMQHIBUAV

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as Comfix.exe (called ComboFix.exe in the below graphic)

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Let me know as we go how the redirections are.

Please run the online scanner at ESET

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Leave the top box checked and then check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push
NOTE: If no malware is found then no log will be produced. Let me know if this is the case.

Not hijacked, I'm guessing?

Nothing, it's just that usually with Gala it also hijacks the registry. Sounds like this isn't happening here and you're home free.

Please give it a test run for a few hours/a day/however long you wish to, and then come back to me. When you're happy to continue then come back and we'll complete the fix. smile.gif

Will do. Thank you for your help.

Given your expertise.... I do have a question. My company is due to renew our Symantec contract and I was going to move to Symantec Endpoint. I have read alot of horrible reviews on this product. There are claims of it being a resource-hog, causing network access chaos upon setup, and that it fails to catch many widely-known threats. What do you recommend for an all-inclusive protection suite? We have approximately 60 pcs and 8 servers.

I am under the gun to figure out what to do.... and I don't want the headaches if Endpoint is as bad as they make it out to be.

Would this have prevented this specific issue??

Thanks again.. thumbup2.gif

According to the last report I saw Norton has slipped to third and now it's TrendMicro and Kaspersky who are leading the way. This was from the independent testers NSS Labs.

Symantec is getting a reputation for being bloated and hogging resources, as you state. This is due to the immense amount of program files the suite now uses. It causes major problems on individual PCs and business networks in some cases.

For TM, you could certainly trial this product.

Kaspersky have Open Space

I should say that I specialise in home PC malware removal and not business networks but from what I've read either of these would suit your needs.
