Could one of the signs of infection be an antivirus/ malware program not working? Or could it be a problem with the program itself?

Program conflicts, improperly installed updates, or more than one security program can also affect your antivirus program. An infection can also stop your antivirus from working depending on what kind of malware it is. Malware can prevent you from accessing security websites, produce popups, or BSOD's. Looking at some of the headings on the malware forum will give you a good idea what to look for if you think you might be infected.
