Like an idiot, I clicked on something I shouldn't have (a pop up telling me I needed update IE-8) . I began having problems with pop ups, and something I've never received before, an AUDIO pop up. At the time I had Windows Security Essentials but nothing gave me any warning. When I experienced all the pop ups, and slow computer, I've tried just about everything from Malwarebytes.com and some other thing I wouldn't recommend to ANYONE; I went to cyberdefender after being misdirected by an advertisement on Malwarebytes.com. Big HUGE mistake! But, now I'm away from them after many headaches and went BACK to my old Anti-Virus Software I had prior to Microsoft Security Essentials, Verizon Internet Security Suite by McAfee. Malwarebytes finds the Trojan as does Verizon ISS but can't delete it. Both give message that reboot is necessary to delete it but after a reboot, they fail to get rid of it, so I still get the warning that I have a Trojan Downloader -BZH (McAfee definition) in process C:\Windows\System32\Svhost.exe .
FILE: C:\System Volume Information\Microsoft\smss.exe
I unzipped GMER and then ran GMER.EXE and almost immediately my computer crashed from download 1 site. After I finally got it back up, I tried again using the download 2 site and seemed to be scanning for about 15 minutes when computer crashed again. I finally got it back up and just decided I would upload the other files and wait for someone to tell me what to do about GMER, if still necessary.
When I look at McAfee definitions for Downloader BZH, it says it's low risk... I finally got a McAfee tech to come into my computer and the couldn't access the smss.exe file so they told me to get with Microsoft to find out how to access this file. Malwarebytes tells me this Trojan name is Downloader cycler.
I'm felling a litte helpless now if no one here can help....Thanks in advance1

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Gringo,
I ran the COMBOFIX and it seemed to be taking a little longer than the instructions said it might. Went past 1/2 hour, but finally reached
the "Completed Stage 48" and right after that I got the following message:
"Find string (QGREP) utility stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." Then I lost internet connection. Finally got it back up. Now, really getting a lot of the AUDIO popup advertising type things.
THanks for your help! Should I attempt to run Combofix again?

I think this is same as before. Gringo, when I ran Combo fix I shut down anti-virus/spyware but I don't think the firewall was shut down. Should I have closed the Firewall when I ran Combo fix and run it again?

It's a Toshiba Satellite, about 2 years old. I'm not sure what a dual boot setup is?

I thought I did...still looking for it. I know it's here somewhere if it came with my laptop. If I can't find it, am I screwed if the fix doesn't work?

Gringo, I looked on the Toshiba web site and they say if necessary I can run the recovery process from the hard drive partition. They said I could order a disk if needed.

Gringo, if I have problems from the solution, I'll try rebooting from the restore partition of the "D" hard drive. What's the next move?

  • Please push the 'Y' key and then press Enter
  • When program ask you Enter your choice: enter 2 and press the Enter key

  • The program will show Available MBR codes:, followed by a list of operating systems. Please enter 3 for vista, and then press Enter.
  • when asked Do you want to fix the MRB code? type in YES and press enter
  • Restart your PC.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. report from MBRcheck
    3. let me know of any problems you may have had
    4. How is the computer doing now?
