Running Windows XP SP3, IE7 (problems also occur when running Firefox)

Got hit with Desktop Security 2010. Didn't acknowledge or install, but some files were installed anyway. Ran a full scan of my computer which quarantined several files that I deleted. Got several popups referencing WIN32/Fakedoc_i, which was detected, but not quarantined by my anti-virus program.

Started having problems with websites, e.g., on Google.com - "Error on Page", no menu (images, maps, gmail, etc.), no autofill when typing in search box; when logging in to other websites, page refreshes instead of logging in; on one website after login, getting "missing codec" message.

(Not sure on the order of these) Ran Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool; registered regsvr32 jscript and vbscript; uninstalled IE7, tried accessing websites using Firefox - still had same issues, reinstalled IE7 - still had same issues.

Followed steps in "Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help". System froze while running GMER scan.

Followed steps to uninstall Desktop Security 2010. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware detected 7 files which were removed. Problems still occurred.

Ran DDS (log information below). Ran GMER. During scan, PC blue-screened with the following message:

"Possibly caused by the following file: kxlcyuow.sys. PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
Stop: 0x00000050 (0xE3E84000, 0x00000000, 0xADCB7C3E, 0x00000001)
kxlcyuow.sys - Address ADCB7C3E base at ADCB7000, DateStamp 4b274f8d"

So, I give up.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
    • The application window will appear
    • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
    • Click Yes to continue
    • A 'Finished!' message will appear
    • Click OK
    • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:
Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.
    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
      • DDS.txt
      • Attach.txt
    • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
    • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
    • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Scan With RKUnHooker
  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.

Hi, Gringo.

Thanks for responding to my post. I've run all of the tools and the requested information is below. I didn't encounter any problems while running them. I haven't had any new symptoms since my initial post.

Thanks for your help with this.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Here is the ComboFix log. I inadvertently clicked the button to start the scan before I turned off the antivirus software, but I think I got everything turned off. Other than that, I didn't have any problems running it, but none of my issues have been resolved.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.
If you don't like Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.

Hi, Gringo.

I ran into a few problems this time:
  • I couldn't find the My Way Search Assistant
  • I couldn't download Adobe Reader. When I clicked on the Error on Page icon, this was the message:
Line: 1
Char: 80
Error: 'adobe' is undefined
Code: 0
URL: http://get.adobe.com/reader
  • I got the following error message when I tried to check for updates for MBAM:
MBAM_ERROR_UPDATING (122, 0, MultiByteToWideChar)
The data area passed to a system call is too small.

I'm still having the same issues as before with IE.

Hello

I would like you to go to this page and pree the fix it button - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

Is there a reason why you have not updated to IE8?

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATIPTA] "C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe"

Hello.

I ran Microsoft FixIt, then HijackThis and removed all of the items listed.

When I go to the ESET web page and click on the ESET Online Scanner button, nothing happens. I took a shot and disabled the pop up blocker, but that didn't help.

When I launch Internet Explorer, it opens up to http://runonce.msn.com/runonce3.aspx with an Error on page message in the lower left corner. This happens even though I changed the home page address in Internet Options.

I updated from IE6 to IE8 a few months ago and hated it, so I went to IE7. Mostly, I found it annoying that there was no way to have it only display the most recently used favorites, and it was a pain to have to scroll through the whole list to find Google or Wikipedia. Also, we're still running IE6 and 7 where I work, so I don't have the frustration of having some functionality at home, but not at work. Okay, quit laughing. I work in IT and I know it's ridiculous. Someday, we're going to join the 21st century and upgrade Windows and IE and install wireless in our buildings, but I'm not holding my breath.

Hello

You should play around with ie8 some more there is alot of stuff to play with, they have what is called a faverites bar that you can add the faverites that you use the most. I use this alot to research the logs here.

Today I have had alot of poeple not being able to use eset that is strange - try this one

:Kaspersky scan:
Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
    • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
    • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
    • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
    • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
        Archives
        Mail databases
    • Click on My Computer under Scan.
    • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
    • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
    • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
    • Please post this log in your next reply.

I can't run this either. When I clicked on the link, nothing happened. I got fed up and uninstalled and reinstalled IE7. Now when I click on the Kaspersky link, it takes me to http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/d...kavwebscan.html, but the screen is blank.

I tried it from my husband's laptop and got the URL for the online scanner. I typed it in on my computer, but it comes up with an error on the page ("Done" in the lower left corner and a yellow triangle with an exclamation point). I see the icons for Update, Scan, Report, Support, and Help, but they're below the buttons instead of on them. I see the requirements and privacy statement, but the "Accept" button is grayed out.

So, am I just totally hosed?

Hi.

No dice on this one, either. The box in the "Find viruses and spyware with our free Online Scanner" is empty. I tried it with both IE and Firefox.

hello

if combofix asks to update itself let it.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
File::
c:\Documents and Settings\Bonner\LOCALS~1\Temp\ArmUI.ini

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

also go to this page and check your activeX - http://www.pcpitstop.com/testax.asp

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. report from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now after running the script?

I ran combofix with no problems. The report is below. I checked the activeX and everything is running properly. I haven't had any new issues, but I'm still having the same issues with IE that I was having in the beginning.
