Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition, and as you'll see I've probably got way too many processes going on - anyway, the problem started about four days ago, and the first sign was the taskbar changing to grey and eventually reverting from the XP look to the Classic style. My various browsers (Mozilla, Explorer & Chrome) all attempt to open Web sites on their own, and the computer will randomly shut down. I've been trying to run GMER, but the computer inevitably shuts down before it completes. I updated and ran Malwarebytes' scanner a couple times but it came back empty. I'm posting the DDS & HijackThis logs below & will attach the DDS attachment as well. Please let me know if there is anything else I can provide. Once again, I really appreciate any help anyone can give.

Thank you,
Matt

Hello the_silent_h

Welcome to BleepingComputer smile.gif
==========================
  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on OTL to run it.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Under Custom scan's and fixes section paste in the below in bold

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
    %systemroot%\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\*.dll

  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.
====================
Download the following GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here
  • Download the randomly named EXE file to your Desktop. Remember what its name is since it is randomly named.
  • Double click on the new random named exe file you downloaded and run it. If prompted about the Security Warning and Unknown Publisher go ahead and click on Run
  • It may take a minute to load and become available.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED
  • IAT/EAT
  • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically only C:\ should be checked)
  • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop
  • **Caution** Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
  • Click OK and quit the GMER program.
  • Note: On Firefox you need to go to Tools/Options/Main then under the Downloads section, click on Always ask me where to save files so that you can choose the name and where to save to, in this case your Desktop.
  • Post that log in your next reply.

Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

If I am helping you and have not responded for 48 hours please send me a pm as I don't always get notifications.

My help is always free, however, if you would like to make a donation to me for the help I have provided please click here Posted Image

kahdah,
First of all, thank you so much for your time and expertise; I really appreciate it. The results of the steps you suggested are posted below.
Since my initial post, my brother ran a few scans on my computer - Windows OneCare, Spybot S&D, MBAM and something called tdsskiller. I'm not sure if they made a difference or not. Here's the text from the OneCare scan:

Exploit: Java/CVE-2008-5353.I
C:\Documents & Settings\HP_Administrator\application data\sun\java\deployment\cache\6.0\32\1eff71a0-2ddd60af
Java\CVE-2009-3867.AJ
C:\Documents & Settings\HP_Administrator\application data\sun\java\deployment\cache\6.0\28\35c62c9c-5e8af7f1
Java/CVE-2009-3867.DR
Virus: Win32/Alureon.H
Virus: Win32/Mariofev.A
hlkm\system\current control set\contrrol\session manager\knowndlls\\user32
C:\windows\system32\user32.dll

My post with the results of the suggested scans is too long, so I'm attaching the text files. For some reason, my ark.txt file is huge and I'm going to have to split it in half and post it as separate posts. Let me know if I did it wrong and I'll re-do. Thanks again - you're awesome!

No problem
Let's get started. smile.gif

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

If I am helping you and have not responded for 48 hours please send me a pm as I don't always get notifications.

My help is always free, however, if you would like to make a donation to me for the help I have provided please click here Posted Image

kahdah,
While everything seems to be running smoothly, I ran another OneCare scan and got results indicating that some of the infections are still hanging around. Here's what it reported:

Protection
9 Severe issues found
Exploit: Java/CVE-2008-5353.AH
Exploit: Java/CVE-2008-5353.FK
Exploit: Java/CVE-2008-5252.I
Exploit: Java/CVE-2009-3867.AJ
Exploit: Java/CVE-2009-3867.AZ
Exploit: Java/CVE-2009-3867.DO
Exploit: Java/CVE-2009-3867.DR
TrojanDowloader: Java/OpenConnection.BW
Virus: Win32/Mariofev.A
Issue 1
c:\system volume information\_restore{106cf321-99a3-4e3a-9103-1bd027606a99}\rp1308\a0233111.dll

Performance
9 registry items found
399.5 MB of temporary files found
Defragment your hard disk(s)
Drive C:\ is 5% fragmented
Drive D:\ is 14% fragmented

What do you think? Should I be worried about these?
Thanks!
