Well, I've been steadily working on this for 3 days now and am finally ready for some technical assistance.

I have a super reliable Dell XPS with 2 hard drives and an active Norton Anti-Virus. The system began slowing a few months ago, then green underlined words were seen in IE and FF which linked to advertisements, then about a week ago my administrator user could not access the internet but the guest user which has restrictions can. Just recently porn pictures have begun popping up. Also recently, a blue screen will appear right after I turn the comptuer on - it reads there is a problem with recently installed hardware or software. It appears to run some diagnostic tests and after several minutes Windows will appear.

These are the following steps I have taken before seeking help from you guys:

- Run Disk Clean up Disk Defrag
- Installed Stopzilla - which seemed to slow the computer down and porn pics started appearing
- Uninstalled Stopzilla - 2 weeks after install
- Installed and ran HiJackthis (saved log file)
- Ran Winsockxpfix
- Installed and ran Malwarebytes (saved log file)
- Installed and Ran all the items in the bleepingcomputer.com Prep for Malware Removal Guide which include:
- DDS (created log files)
- GMER - this crashed my computer which defaulted to a blue (dos looking) screen

I think she just needs a really good cleaning and a trained eye to make sure all Viruses are removed.
Hope you can help get my computer running again! Much thanks for any help you can provide!

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on OTL to run it.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Under Custom scan's and fixes section paste in the below in bold

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

Hi please keep all posts in this one topic.
I have merged both of your topics into this one.

Download the following GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here
  • Download the randomly named EXE file to your Desktop. Remember what its name is since it is randomly named.
  • Double click on the new random named exe file you downloaded and run it. If prompted about the Security Warning and Unknown Publisher go ahead and click on Run
  • It may take a minute to load and become available.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED
  • IAT/EAT
  • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically only C:\ should be checked)
  • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop
  • **Caution** Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
  • Click OK and quit the GMER program.
  • Note: On Firefox you need to go to Tools/Options/Main then under the Downloads section, click on Always ask me where to save files so that you can choose the name and where to save to, in this case your Desktop.
  • Post that log in your next reply.

If gmer will not run then try to uncheck everything in the right hand side but for sections.
If it still fails to run please try it in Safe Mode.
Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

If I am helping you and have not responded for 48 hours please send me a pm as I don't always get notifications.

My help is always free, however, if you would like to make a donation to me for the help I have provided please click here Posted Image

Well, I ran the gmer several times. First attempt the program locked up. Restarted computer, tried to run it again and it locked again. Restarted computer, tried to run it again but unchecked everything on the right except sections and the computer crashed and defaulted to a blue screen that said a serious error had occured. I restarted it again, ran the gmer in safe mode and came up with this log:

GMER 1.0.15.15281 - http://www.gmer.net
Rootkit scan 2010-07-30 07:25:45
Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3
Running: w8qc5wit.exe; Driver: C:\DOCUME~1\RITAS~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\kgedyaog.sys

---- Kernel code sections - GMER 1.0.15 ----

? SYMEFA.SYS The system cannot find the file specified. !

---- EOF - GMER 1.0.15 ----

Does this tell you anything?

Nothing shows in your logs.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

If I am helping you and have not responded for 48 hours please send me a pm as I don't always get notifications.

Thank you for all your assistance thus far kahdah!

I ran the combofix. it tried to run the system restore process but failed so then the program had me install something to allow it to proceed. I clicked yes - agreed to the license agreement and it began to do it's thing. I walked away from the computer and when I came back, there was this log on the screen:

Malwarebytes did not detect any viruses (great!). Looks like all those previous viruses were quarantined or deleted...awesome! Is there anything else you suggest I do?

Also, I still am unable to access the internet through my main user id. I am using another user that I created to access Firefox and type this reply. My main user id still gets email so it appears to be a setting or something. It happened after I uninstalled Stopzilla.

Thanks for all your help! Marley2000

A follow-up note from earlier reply: I restarted my computer after posting the last reply and although I received a blue warning screen stating something like 'a serious error occurred with windows and the computer had to be shut down', when I restarted a 2nd time, I checked to see if I could get online with my normal log-in and I could! Both Explorer and Firefox work!!! Wonder if it had something to do with a virus ??? ...

Let me know if you think I need to run anymore fixes.

Thanks!
Marley 2000

Trying to run the Kaspersky scanner but my computer keeps crashing sad.gif when it starts and runs for just a few moments a blue screen appears on the monitor and says the system has recovered from a serious error and had to shut down. The error report shows the following:

C:\DOCUME~1\RITAS~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER9cf7.dir00\Mini081210-02.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\RITAS~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER9cf7.dir00\sysdata.xml

Should I try to run the Kaspersky in safe mode?

That is weird never had it do that.
Try the following though:

Please click here to download Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool.
  1. Double click on the file you just downloaded and let it install.
  2. It will install to your desktop.
  3. After that leave what is selected and put a check next to My Computer.
  4. Click on the option that says Threat Detection and change it to Disinfect, delete if disinfection fails.
  5. Then click on Start Scan.
  6. Before it is done it may prompt for action regardless of the setting so choose delete if prompted.
  7. When the scan is done no log will be produced.
  8. Click on the bottom where it says Report to open the report.
  9. Then highlight of of the items found by using ctrl + a on your keyboard to select all or use your mouse to select all then right click and choose copy.
  10. This will copy the items that it found to the clipboard you can then open notepad (go to start then run then type in notepad) and choose paste to paste the contents into Notepad.
  11. You can save this on the desktop.
  12. Post the contents of the document in your next reply.

Note: This tool will self uninstall when you close it so please save the log before closing it.

Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

Will run the Kaspersky scan momentarily ... just wanted to mention that I have 2 other users on my computer - I've only been running the fixes on my main user - is this correct or do I need to run the fixes on each user separately. The reason I ask is because I notice that each user has his own set of files (and possibly viruses).

Running kaspersky now...
