This time it happened when I was setting up secure wireless. Ironic, eh? I did a quick scan with Malwarebytes that didn't find anything. I'm scanning now with Sophos; it's my work computer and work uses Sophos anti-virus. The scan is showing nothing so far. I just can't do anything with the computer. (I'm not enormously confident in Sophos.)

Hey Gringo. I an't get anywhere on the infected computer. I'm posting from a different, uninfected computer. Can I put Defogger on a flash drive and run it from that?

I cannot download DeFogger to the infected computer from the internet. I can't access the internet with the infected computer. I can get online with this uninfected computer. Can I download Defogger from the intenet onto this uninfected computer, put it on a flash drive, and from there put DeFogger on the infeted computer?

yes you can with all the tools I ask you to run, but lets be safe and run this tool from the clean computer first (with the jumpdrive connected)

: Download and run Flash_Disinfector

Download Flash_Disinfector from here and save it to your desktop.
Doubleclick on Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. This may include your mobile phone.
Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.

The RKUnHooker wouldn't run from the jumpdrive and it wouldn't run when I copied it to the desktop of the infected computer.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

***********I tried running it in Safe Mode, but Combofix says Sophos is running. I can't figure out how to turn Sophos off.*********

I can't run the Combofix. The AV Security Suite says it is infected.

I'm getting the following:

"This machine does not have the 'Microsoft Windows recovery console' installed. Alternately, anexisting installation of the recovery console may be present but requires updating.

Without it, Combofix shall not attempt the fixing of some serious infections.

Click 'Yes' to have Combofix download/install it.

NOTE: this requires an active internet connection."

I don't have an internet connection in Safe Mode. I can't run Combofix in normal mode. Can I get the download on the jumpdrive from my uninfected computer? Is there a possibility that my jumpdrive is infeted now?
