Please help! I almost have this thing under control. I am experiencing browser redirects to these sites:

64.192.130.141, which will most always lead to:
conversion.cpvfeed.com, but sometimes to:
www.abcsearch.com,
www.dealtime.com,
www.looksmart.com

I also had a problem with pop-ups from www.icannnews.com, but it looks like Housecall took care of that yesterday. Now, all I have going on are the redirects. Here's what I did before posting this:

Ran TrendMicro's Housecall again , found infections, and fixed them (mainly tracking cookies, but two viruses);
Ran Avast! on reboot, tested clean;
Ran Spybot S&D, it tested clean; and
Ran Ad-Aware SE, found infections (again, merely tracking cookies), and fixed those as well.

I have an HJT log for you:

Thanks for taking my case, Cretemonster! I do still have the same problem.

I just ran Spybot S&D (clean) and Ad-Aware (2 tracking cookies, deleted), along with Avast! (one repaired virus) before making the log below:

Download the L2mfix from
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
or
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.

Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until I ask you to.

If the l2mfix throws up any type of errors when first run--> Select Option 5 from the l2mfix and once at the Site,Click on the link that apply to your Operating System!

Double Click the file it downloads and Extract the files to its predetermined System32 folder!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer.

After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log.

Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Lets make sure the l2mfix didnt leave anything behind!

Download WinPFind:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Restart in Safe Mode

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder!

Restart Normal and have the PC scanned here
http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml

Post back with the logs from WinPFind and F-Secure

Here are the logs requested:

First, the WinPFind log:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Well,I didnt know BitDefender actually deleted infections it found, too cool!

Lets be double sure those files are gone!

Go to Safe Mode and be sure Windows is Showing Hidden Files
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/...al62.html#winxp

Navigate to--> C:\Documents and Settings\John Hughes\Local Settings\Temp

Thats a Temp folder,so technically, you can delete the entire contents of the folder but be sure to leave the folder itself intact!

Rerstart Normal and Please Install these 2 to add to the Security of the PC!

SpywareBlaster:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Update Immediatly!

WinHelp2002 Hosts File
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts2.htm

Disable System Restore
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...src=sec_doc_nam

Go ahead and Reconfigure Msconfig the way you like the PC to Startup!

Go ahead and remove any of the tools downloaded that are of no use anymore!

Post back and let me know how things are?

One quick question before I proceed with disabling System Restore:

Accoring to Symantec, disabling Restore deletes all restore points created thus far. It says I can go back an enable it later to create new ones. Now, I am assuming that you are having me disable it to remove registry entries or restore points containing elements of malware. Can I go back and turn it on once all previous restore points have been erased? Hopefully I won't need System Restore, but you never know.

Update: So far, everything seems to be working A-OK! I have not once been redirected since completion of the steps up to this point. I am going to give it a couple of days to see where it stands then. I will post back here and let you know how things are, and then you (or BleepingComputer.com, whoever receives them) will get a donation from me. You, indeed, have saved my computer's life! Thanks for everything!

I spose I should edit that to say Disable System Restore and Restart the PC

Once restarted, renable System Restore and restart once more!

This will create a nice new restore point for you to fall back on should you ever need it!

Sorry about that!

After Renabling System Restore, you are done, just read through those 3 little black links in my signature, which need to be updated too!

These links will give you some heads up ideas on how to avoid this in the future!

If you ever need us again for anything, you know where to find us!

All is well in my universe now! Thanks, Cretemonster, for all your help. My computer is behaving normal now and is no longer in danger of being hurled off a 10-story building. I greatly appreciate the timely manner in which you handled this case and if I ever need you or any of your colleagues in the future, I will not hesitate to call on you. Again, thanks for everything.

Checks in the mail, dude!

John H.
