I am running Windows XP Home, on a Dell 4550. I can still boot to normal mode, and get online. I update Malwarebytes' every day and run it from both safe mode and normal mode. It will sometimes catch about 5 items and remove them, usually being TROJAN.FRAUDPACK, ROUGE.ANTIVIRUSSUITE, TROJAN.DOWNLOADER, AVSOFT, AVSUITE. But this only stops some of the pop-ups for a while, and the same items keep reappearing. I get redirected when I try to use Google sometimes, and lots of weird stuff has been happening such as Adobe Acrobat or Java launching for no apparent reason. I should add that AVG will occasionally block an intrusion, but scans turn up nothing. System Restore will not work. I have tried some of the fixes suggested on the web, but they are apparently outdated or just don't work in this case. I have no DVD burner, external drive, or other computer to backup to. If I try and format a CD-R with direct cd, it formats it, but shows 50 MB as already used, even though there are no files showing (I assume this is probably a virus?). I would also like to know how effective an FDISK-FORMAT-REINSTALL would be against such a smart infection.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

I will be handling your log to help you get cleaned up. I apologize for the delay but the forum is very busy.

As you can see the logs we ask for are very extensive and take a lot of time to investigate. In addition, since I am still in training all of my responses have to be reviewed by our excellent expert staff so there may be a delay in response time. The advantage is that your log will be evaluated by two sets of eyes and two brains.

If you haven't already, you can keep the link to this topic in your Favorites. Alternatively, you can click the Options button at the top bar of this topic and Track this Topic, where you can choose email notifications.

Please make sure Word Wrap in notepad is turned off. When copying and pasting logs paste them directly in the reply box only attach logs if asked to. Do not wrap logs in codebox or code tags. It makes it very difficult to read and analyze them. Please paste them directly into the reply box.
Please do not make any changes to your system until we are through. Fixes are based upon information that is current from your system so any changes can affect our strategy. Please refrain from running any tools we may use without specific instructions.

If your operating system is Windows Vista or Windows 7 it may be necessary to right click then choose Run as Administrator any programs we use.

Hello? Anybody there? With all do respect , I'm losing my patience. I posted this problem 5 days ago, and have yet to receive anything but a form letter. I see other people with the same problem who posted 2 days after me are already getting personal attention. I have done exactly what you asked (unlike other folks), and done it twice, because you wanted updated info. Now I'm being told I have to wait a few more days before we can even start. I thought it was first come first serve ? Why am I being ignored? Can somebody please help me?

While I understand your frustration, I really have to ask you to show some respect for the people who are helping you here. The reason you are asked to wait a bit longer is this:

All helpers here are volunteers who do this in their free time. If we would not learn others how to remove malware, there would be no way we could reply to all requests for help (and be assured that all requests are getting an answer).

Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.

If you can not appreciate the effort made by both our trainees and our Instructors, then I suggest you take your computer to a repair shop and pay in order to have your computer fixed.

Are you using a Proxy Server?


Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programs (in your case LimeWire 5.4.6 ). These programs allow file sharing between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world cyber crime has become an enormous problem. Different ways are used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a huge amount of prospective victims can be reached through them.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading infected files via peer-to-peer tools and so these tools must be used with extreme care. Some further reading on this subject, along with included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

It is also important to note that sharing entertainment files and proprietary software infringes on copyright laws in many countries over the world and you are putting yourself at risk of of being indicted through organizations watching over the rights of the authors of such files (i.e. the RIAA for music files, or the MPAA for movie files in the USA) or the authors of the files themselves.

Naturally there are also legal ways to use these services, such as downloading Linux distributions or office suites such as "Open Office."

If you decide to keep this program please refrain from using it until we get your computer clean.


Also, I notice you have the Ask Toolbar installed. I suggest you unistall Ask Toolbar for the following reasons.
  • Promoting its toolbars on sites targeted to kids.
  • Promoting its toolbars through ads that appear to be part of other companies' sites.
  • Promoting its toolbars through other companies' spyware.
  • Installing without any disclosure whatsoever and without any consent whatsoever.
  • Soliciting installations via "deceptive door openers" that do not accurately describe the offer; failing to affirmatively show a license agreement; linking to a EULA via an off-screen link.
  • Making confusing changes to users' browsers -- increasing Ask's revenues while taking users to pages they didn't intend to visit.

Copy and paste the following file path into the "Suspicious files to scan" box on the top of the page:

C:\Updater.exe

Click on the Upload button
If a pop-up appears saying the file has been scanned already, please select the ReScan button.
Once the Scan is completed, click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. This will copy the link of the report into the
Clipboard.
Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply.

Step 2.

Your logs were incomplete. This might be secondary to your current infection. Could you please try and see if your able to produce a complete DDS log?

If DDS is no longer on your desktop then:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
