Hi,
This is really my first use of this site and I apologize if I am posting this in the wrong place.
I've been getting hijacked whenever I do a google search and then click on one of the listed results. The first time I click a result, it takes me to any one of a variety of different unrelated urls ...usually ads, sometimes porn. Then if I go back and click on the same result again in the google search result page, it works fine that second time and future times. If I click another result from that list...first time it goes to a rogue site, after that it works fine.
I'm also having some sites that just don't load that always loaded fine before. Sometimes it says it is waiting for google-analytics.
I was led to run the ComboFix program according to another page on this site, and it says I should open a new topic and post the resulting combofix log and ask for help analyzing it.

Thanks very much,
Frank

Hello

update combofix

I would like you to download an updated virsion of combofix.
Delete the version of combofix you have now on your desktop and download a new one from here

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

    1. Close any open browsers.
    2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note:Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Hi Gringo,
Sorry for the slow reply, but once again, I am only sporadically getting notice of your posts. Today's was the first notice I got since my post the other day. I did set up to get email notifications, and my spam filters do not appear to be blocking you, so going forward I will have to check the forum a few times a day to see if there has been ant new posts from you. Thanks for yoru patience with this.

I also wanted to mention that before I started this thread, one of the common hijacks was when I ran a Google search, then when I'd hit any one of the resulting links, the first time I hit the link it would take me to "http://results5.google.com/". If I go back and hit the same link a second time from the Google results list, it takes me properly to the actual link. After I posted this thread I found instructions in another thread (I think on this site) to install Noscripts, which I did. That stopped this Google problem for a while, but now it is back even though Noscripts still seems to be running ok everywhere else. For instance, I am now able to go to some links that had been stalling before while "waiting for google-analytics.com". But the Noscripts is clearly just a bandaid, and I know there is some underlying problem that needs fixing.

Also, all this goes back a few weeks to when I was running on Vista. To try to fix it, I took a brand new hard drive in an external box, partitioned it C/D, and saved all of my non executable data files (documents, photos, songs, calendar, emails, etc) to the D partition. Then I exchanged (physically) the hard drive from my computer and put the new external hard drive in and installed Windows 7 fresh from the CD to the C partition. I installed a new Firefox strait from the Monzilla link, and the same exact browser hijacking was still there. So I suspect the problem lies somewhere in the stuff on my D partition?
The combo fix log is too big and teh site won't let me post it, so I will next try to attack the file. I was unable to figure out how to save and run the program from my Desktop. It automatically saves and runs from the C drive, and when I tried to move it to my desktop and rerun it, it would not. So this is run from the C drive, then I saved a copy of the log to my desktop. If that is not acceptable, let me know and I'll try again.
Frank

yea google-analytics can be a pain - you seem to know your way around the computer I would like you to reset your router

Here is how if you don't know.

Resetting Router

Letís try to reset the router to its default configuration.
  • This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router.
  • Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds).
  • If you donít know the router's default password, you can look it up. Here
  • You also need to reconfigure any security settings you had in place prior to the reset.
  • You may also need to consult with your Internet service provider to find out which DNS servers your network should be using or you can use OpenDNS

Note: After resetting your router, it is important to set a non-default password, and if possible, username, on the router. This will assist in eliminating the possibility of the router being hijacked again.

Here is where I need your help

1. what type of router do you have?
2. reset the router and let me know if it helped
3.change dns to open dns and see if that helped
4. while inside the router GUI look for anything to do with google or error redirecter or helper it could be worded anything

Let me know what you find or if nothing helped

Hi Gringo,

I have a Netgear WNR834B v2 wireless router connected through my ISP's Arris TM602G modem. I had my PC connected through the wireless router via an ethernet cable, and we use the router wirelessly with a couple of laptops. While one of the laptops has a couple of its own problems, it has been my ethernet-connected PC that all this thread is about. Anyway, I first reset the router, then lost internet connection. Even trying to go to Netgear's 192.168.1.1 setup site failed. So I rewired the PC directly to the modem, but now found that teh modem was suddenly not able to connect. I called my ISP, and they had to reset the modem remotely. They said that the router reset had somehow disabled the modem. Once the modem was reset, I got connection if I wire right to the modem, but still nothing if I wire through the router. But I could connect to the Netgear setup when wired through the router, and it indicated "no internet connection". Even when I reloaded all of the right settings, no connection.

But meanwhile, I notice that the google problems are gone when I am wired right to the modem. I also notice that if I shut off Noscripts, I so far am not seeing the google-analytics problem. And I am seeing absolutely no hijacking at the moment.

Apparently, all my troubles were somehow rooted in that router. I did not realize routers had so much authority. I'm thinking that even if there is a way to reprogram the router, it probably makes more sense to just buy a new one and start fresh.

Thanks very much for your help with all of this. I'll be back in touch if the problem comes up again. Meanwhile, I will forego the wireless and just stay hard-wired until I pick up a new router.

All my best,
Frank

Hello frank

Thanks for that info - I have been suspecting that the router was causing the google - analics problem

I have not heard of the router knocking out the modem.

But the router can be hijacked, if you get that one working or when you get a new one you need to change the default password to login to the router and not just the network password
