Hi and thanks for the detailed instructions on submitting the posting to your forum. Having seen more postings appear on this topic on several forums and some conclusions that the source of the remaining problem is buried, I am requesting some expert assistance in locating and removing the bug and would appreciate your support. Thanks!

Summary: I've been fighting the w32.unruy!gen1 bug on my Windows XP SP3 computer since first notified by NIS 2010 on June 25 (several chats and scanning sessions with Norton were of no assistance). Files were being quarantined initially but now I no longer am receiving “Quarantined” messages in the NIS 2010 log, only "Blocked" messages for systemvolumeinformation\microsoft\services.exe and smss.exe. NIS appears to be either blocking or maybe creating then deleting these two files during startup and before login. Something is successfully creating a Microsoft folder in system volume information each reboot before NIS blocks the virus, i.e., if I delete the Microsoft folder it appears during the next reboot and in reviewing other XP computers the Microsoft folder does not appear to be normal in that directory (note: EfaData folder is also being modified at the same time – coincidence?). Have performed a lot of searches to try to locate files modified in the same time frame, searched the registry for file names, etc. to no avail.

Here’s a timeline of some key events: (Note: directory for services.exe and smss.exe is systemvolumeinformation\microsoft unless otherwise specified; also note website origin from NIS log)

June 23 – systemvolumeinformation\microsoft appears to have been created at 12:38 p.m. during startup. Services.exe and smss.exe possibly created at this time.
June 24 – NIS releases update with protection for W32.unruy!gen1
June 25 – NIS blocks \microsoft\services.exe at 11:16 a.m. and quarantines it at 11:19 a.m. (RUNNING PROGRAM), apparently during scan and/or NIS update. NIS quarantines \local settings\temp\loader13327437.exe and loader.exe downloaded from origin www.adserver987.com/images/5050.exe at 10:56 a.m., apparently during a scan.
June 28 – NIS blocks services.exe at 10:25 a.m. at startup and smss.exe at 11:41 a.m., apparently during a scan. NIS quarantines smss.exe at 11:41 a.m. (RUNNING PROGRAM). NIS blocks services.exe at 11:54 a.m. at startup. NIS quarantines services.exe at 11:57 a.m.
June 29 – NIS blocks smss.exe and services.exe at 10:37 a.m at startup. NIS quarantines c:\document and settings\owner\application data\sun\java\deployment\cache\6.0\57\a441979-4de070e0 downloaded from origin www.adserver987.com/images/5050.exe at 10:56 a.m. NIS quarantines c:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp\smss.exe from source ctv13356.exe at 11:06 a.m. during scan. NIS blocks smss.exe and services.exe at 11:27 a.m at startup. AFTER THIS ONLY BLOCK MESSAGES ARE FOUND AT STARTUP. I’d followed NIS instructions on their website to disable system restore, run scan in safe mode (also think I ran disk cleaup) on this day. Assumed that is why files were no longer having to be quarantined but correlation not confirmed.

I’ve posted and attached the requested files. I ran gmer but it locked my system up and after some time I finally had to hard force it to shut down. Tried again and after scanning for a few minutes it blue screened.

Having seen more postings appear on this topic on several forums and some conclusions that the source of the remaining problem is buried, I am requesting some expert assistance in locating and removing the bug and would appreciate your support. First time here so if I did anything incorrectly, please let me know.

Thanks!

Hi Gringo,

Thanks for the prompt response. RKUnHooker results are below. Tried to download MBR.EXE but NIS 2010 is quarantining and deleting it with log message: (WS.Reputation.1) detected by Download Insight from ad13.geekdstogo.com. Suggestions? Thanks.

Hi Gringo,

OK, just wanted to make sure I didn't change anything without your guidance. Below are the MBR results. Seems to have identified Black Internet which I've previously seen mentioned in a number of places online.

MBRCheck, version 1.0.2
© 2010, AD

\\.\C: --> \\.\PhysicalDrive0

Size Device Name MBR Status
--------------------------------------------
37 GB \\.\PhysicalDrive0 Known-bad MBR code detected (Black Internet)!

Found non-standard or infected MBR.
Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:

Greetings

yep that thing is makeing a strong pass on the forums now

I want you to run combofix and let it install the recovery console we need to use it next

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Hi Gringo,

ComboFix ran smoothly. Only glitch was Mozilla could connect to the internet while IE could not but that was resolved quickly in IE.

Log posted below. You asked how the system was doing so I reenabled NIS 2010 app and Firewall and Windows Firewall and rebooted. NIS is still blocking c:\systemvolumeinformation\microsoft\services.exe and smss.exe at reboot and microsoft folder that was deleted by ComboFix is still reappearing.

Note a trial version of Roxio Creator was downloaded on June 21 from a non-Roxio site as Roxio was no longer offering trials. Wanted to make sure it could do what I wanted before buying. Now have purchased the current version so had deinstalled the trial within the past several days. Possibly could have picked up the virus during that search. In my initial post you will find a reference to www.adserver987.com/images/5050.exe. Browsing Google search that file and also B7.EXE and B123.EXE are identified as possible threats.

ComboFix Log Note: I modified the ComboFix log to shield my name by substituting "FIRST LAST".

Hi Gringo,

Typed in "fixmbr" and received a caution: "This computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record. FIXMBR may damage your partition tables if you proceed. This could cause all the partitions on the current hard disk to become accessible ...

IS IT OK TO PROCEED?

THANKS

Hi Gringo,

Here's the latest MBR log. FYI, NIS did not block those files this time and the time stamp on the Microsoft folder did not change during the reboot.

MBRCheck, version 1.0.2
© 2010, AD

\\.\C: --> \\.\PhysicalDrive0

Size Device Name MBR Status
--------------------------------------------
37 GB \\.\PhysicalDrive0 Windows XP MBR code detected

Done! Press ENTER to exit...

Hello

I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
Rootkit::
C:\System Volume Information\Microsoft\smss.exe
C:\System Volume Information\Microsoft\services.exe

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. report from Combofix
    2. report from MBAM
    3. let me know of any problems you may have had
    4. How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Hi Gringo,

ComboFix ran (it automatically rebooted during process) and log is below. MBAM did not give me the opportunity to select Show Results and uncheck any boxes, maybe because it found no infections?

I'll reboot and see if NIS still blocks anything and let you know in a minute.

Hi Gringo,

Shutdown and restarted the system twice with NIS enabled and NIS is no longer having to block W32.unruy!gen1 for services.exe and smss.exe and the microsoft folder is not being created in c:\systemvolumeinformation. Do you think it's clean or are there any other steps to take?

Thanks
