I am trying to help a friend who's computer is being redirected to random sites when he tries to access the web. His computer is running windows xp professional with sp3.
I am unable to runs windows update, each time I try it says it has a problem, if I run the diagnose network connection it says theconnection is working properly. I do not get an actual error message just the Microsoft options to diagnose the problem.
It will not allow me to access Trend Micro to run House Call.
I used another computer to download Malwarebyts and am running that as I type this, it's found 7 issues so far.
I have downloaded Combofix but have heeded the warning not to run it until posting to this site.
Can I proceed to run combofix after malwarebytes finishes running what do you suggest
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated before I reinstall Windows which will be a challenge because I will loose everything on his computer
malwarebytes found 7 problems, I selected it to remove them which it did after a while. It tried to reboot which got stuck on saving your settings, I shut down but holding the power button. When I restarted I did a search from trend micro, when I selected house call from the search results, I say "jump" and then got redirected. I am also still not able to access the microsoft windows update site
EDIT: Moved from XP to Am I Infected forum ~ Hamluis.
