Hi

I'm running on Windows XP and Google Chrome.
I had no idea how it happened but recently i got this problem where the wave volume keeps muting by itself every now and then. Besides that, there are sound ads which keep appearing together with IE pop ups. Even when gaming, it keeps returning to the desktop page by itself.

I've read up on the forum and i realised i'm not the only one with this problem. I tried following the steps given by the replies but it was rather confusing and i encountered some problems along the way. For instance, the scan using GMER.exe was taking hours and it became non-responsive suddenly.

So i was wondering if there is any one familiar with solving this problem that is willing to help me.

Thank you for your time.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

MBRCheck

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
  • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
  • It will show a Black screen with some data on it
  • Right click on the screen and select > Select All
  • Press Control+C
  • Open a notepad and press Control+V
  • now please copy that report to this thread

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. report from MBRCheck
    3. let me know of any problems you may have had
    4. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Whereas for the MBRCheck, i couldn't "Select All" but it states:
MBRCheck, version 1.0.0
<c> 2010, AD

\\.\C: --> \\.\PhysicalDrive0
\\.\D: --> \\.\PhysicalDrive0

Size Device Name MBR Status
__________________________________________________
149GB \\.\PhysicalDrive0 Unknown MBR code

Found non-standard or infected MBR.
Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:

However, the problem of wave volume muting as well as IE pop ups is still there.
Also, since the ComboFix log preparation, i keep receiving a window stating "Internet Explorer is not your currently your default broswer. Would you like to ... etc" despite my attempts to cancel it.

Please restart the computer Twice

Now I would like you to rerun combofix for me and send me this report

Hi

I couldn't find the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console option when restarting.

After reading some of the tutorials on bleepingcomputer, i realised that you need the windows XP disc which i dont have it with me.
Is there any way i can get access to the Microsoft windows recovery console option without the use of the windows XP disc?

Thanks

I don't seem to see that option though.

But the thing is ever since i restarted, all the problems mentioned earlier on seems to have been fixed.
It has been 4 hours now and no signs of any wave volume muting, IE pop ups etc.

Thanks for all your help

Burn recovery console cd
  1. Download recovery_console_cd.zip file to your drive and extract it to its own folder (c:\recoverycd for example).
  2. Download floppy disk setup package xp pro for your operating system (XP pro) and save it to the folder you extracted the zip to.
  3. Rename the floppy disk setup package to Bootdisk.exe.
  4. Insert a blank cd into your burner.
  5. Double-click the RecoveryCD.bat file and follow the prompts to burn a cd that will allow you to boot to the recovery console.

Boot into recovery console
  • insert the cd that we made into cd player
  • restart the computer
  • screen will say "Windows set up" just wait
  • at the welcome screen press "R"
  • type 1 to enter c:\windows
  • type in the following and press enter
    • fixmbr

completely shut down the computer and wait a full min then turn the computer back on and rerun combofix for me
