My laptop is ridiculouly slow and I have even lost the original xp CD that came with it so I can't even do a clean install.

Do you see anything in the log that is slowing it down ?

Thanks.

You can stop and disable this service, but other than that, I do not see much more that you can shut off. You do not have much running as it is. You can try defragging the hard drive and seeing if that would help.

I have defragged and ran error checking (and fixing). That hasn't helped. I just think I need to scrub my registry but is there a way to do it without doing a clean install ? I can't find my XP CD that came with PC and if I use my friend's XP CD, I will not have product key to use So I really would like to clean it up without having to do clean install.

Registry cleaners can be dangerous and make your computer have even more problems. You should be able to use http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml to retrieve your cd key and then use your friends media to do a fresh install.

Plus if you call microsoft they tend to have a plan where they can send you new media for almost nothing if you provide a cd key.
