I should start by telling you that I know very little about computers. I am fine using software, and intelligent enough to work things out and follow detailed instructions, but have no idea how to deal wth virusus/rebuild/networks or what half the files on my computer actually do.

Last night I started getting pop-up windows about malware and antivirus scanners. The were clearly dodgy. I attempted to simply uninstall them through the control panel, but obviously this did nothing. As they we interupting any use of my laptop, and causing it to keep shutting down, I made a rather crude attempt to fight them. I started the lappy in safe mode, and as I knew no one with any computer knowledge at all, used a mates laptop and google to try to learn a quick fix. As I was inundated by pages advertising more anti-malware programs, and did not know what to trust and what was more dodgy crap, I found some pages with manual instructions for specific virus removal. I deleted many associated files from the registry (I'd never been in there before!) and the AV Suite and AntiMalware Doctor programs have stopped harrassing me. A few of the file names were somewhat ambiguos, and although everyting seems to be running smoothly, I am concerned that I was playing Russian Roulette deleting things that just looked close enough to the one I was advised to delete! So now that my laptop is at least functioning, I got back on google to look at recommendations for automated malware removal (or at least more accurate instructions!!) That's when I came across your site, and realised how dangerous my little knowledge may be!!

I am still getting "Windows Defender" pop-ups, but I'm quite convinced they're not the microsoft version as they're so intrusive. I'm also being innundated with pop-ups and adverts. Nothing more from AV Suite and AntiMalware Doctor, but got knows if I left any files behind?

I've not had stuff like this before, but it seems like I must have picked up a bunch of them in one go as I'm getting lots of different messages? It's clearly time I actually learnt to clean my computer properly and protect it effectively, rather than just bodge a flukey fix.

Could you please help me to clean this thing up and recommend what I need to protect it against problems in the future? I don't even know the diffence between malware, adware and a virus?! wacko.gif I only have my laptop, and it's my TV too, I really can't afford for it to die :-(

Here is the contents of the DDS file and the other two should be attached:
Thank you so much

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit

This could allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC could be compromised and there is no way to be sure that your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Thank you so much for your help

I would like to be as safe as possible - is there a downside to a rebuild, and any support available to instruct me on how to do so?

I have read through the links on ID fraud etc - I do use my PC for banking. The advice contained was for US, is there anything I need to do in the UK other than inform my bank and paypal, such as a central credit office that could pick up any applications etc made in my name?

Thanks. I will copy everything tonight. I will probably not be able to get back online until Monday now. I have changed all my passwords and will not connect the laptop to the net again.

Does it need cleaning up - or does re-formatting the whole thing do that?

as long as you format the drive it will be good - there is a way called repair install and this will not work

I have found a Vista disk and have an old external drive to copy all my photos etc to. Will you be able to instruct me on how to rebuild it?

Greetings

I have not done this in Vista or have a Vista Machine to walk you thru it - I think it would be best and safer to go here and start a thread with them.
