Hi, thank you for helping. My system might have malware. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium – 64-bit on my Dell 1545 laptop.

I upgraded Webroot to:

Webroot Internet Security Essentials

version 6.1.0.145

Security Definitions version 1724

The trouble began after the upgrade. I did not realize Webroot had shut off my Windows Firewall. I also shut off the Webroot firewall. I began getting numerous Services Shield warnings like the following. I always tried to block them.:

Webroot System Services Shield:

The program has detected a change to your service configuration information.

Svchost.exe is attempting to delete iphlpsvc

svchost.exe is a signed application

Webroot System Services Shield:

The program has detected a change to your service configuration information.

Svchost.exe is attempting to delete BFE

svchost.exe is a signed application

Webroot System Services Shield:

The program has detected a change to your service configuration.

Svchost.exe is attempting to delete Tcpip

svchost.exe is a signed application

Webroot System Services Shield:

The program has detected a change to your service configuration.

Svchost.exe is attempting to delete NetBT

svchost.exe is a signed application

Webroot System Services Shield:

The program has detected a change to your service configuration.

Wmiadap is attempting to delete Wmidaprpl

svchost.exe is a signed application ?

Webroot System Services Shield:

services.exe is attempting to modify trustedinstaller

The program has detected a change to your service configuration.

Svchost.exe is attempting to delete BFE

The Webroot firewall reported the following, after I started it briefly:

Webroot Firewall has detected that an application is attempting to access internet

msfeedssync

runonce

sprtcmd

msfeedssync

I now startup the Windows Firewall manually (does not start automatically anymore—separate issue!) I had a couple other security programs running that I think I have stopped. I ran HijackThis and I checked some of its lines.

My system ran very slowly today, when I was logged in to my company from home. I also am suddenly missing special desktop icons on the top. The login page looks different, too.

I have malware, don't I? Or these were normal services/processes, and my monitoring regime was what was corrupt? Thanks again for helping. I appreciate it.

Well it appears so...
Svchost.exe is attempting to delete iphlpsvc
iphlpsvc
Service that offers IPv6 connectivity over an IPv4 network.

The Base Filtering Engine service the Base Filtering Engine (BFE) is a service that manages firewall and Internet Protocol security

Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.46) and save it to your desktop.
Before you save it rename it to say zztoy.exe

alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Hello ,Let's do a safe mode scan and see if it's your monitoring regime was what was corrupt.

Next run ATF and SAS: If you cannot access Safe Mode, run in normal ,but let me know.

Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

From your regular user account..
Download Attribune's ATF Cleaner and then SUPERAntiSpyware , Free Home Version. Save both to desktop ..
DO NOT run yet.
Open SUPER from icon and install and Update it
Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
Close browsers before scanning.
Scan for tracking cookies.
Terminate memory threats before quarantining
.
Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program. DO NOT run yet.

Now reboot into Safe Mode: How to enter safe mode(XP)
Using the F8 Method
Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode
.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox or Opera browser click that browser at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program
.

NOW Scan with SUPER
Open from the desktop icon or the program Files list
On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
Perform a Complete scan. After scan,Verify they are all checked.
Click OK on the summary screen to quarantine all found items.
If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.

To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log.
A text file will open in your default text editor.
Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
Click Close to exit the program.

Please ask any needed questions, post logs and Let us know how the PC is running now.

ATF Cleaner and SuperAntiSpyWare both ran great with updates in safe mode under my user id (which has Administrator privileges). It found 7 files as the following log shows. I still have a few problems, though.

I see only one log. There are still 3 items in quarantine, which I did not delete yet in case the items were needed by you. They are the first item above in adware.flash and the two items "...adbrite[2].txt" and "...112.2o7[1].txt." Should I now get rid of them?

The ATF-Cleaner stated that it got rid of about 35 MB. Wow.

Now my system seems to be running much faster. With "nothing" running, the task manager shows cpu is at about 0-3 % and the memory is at about 1 GB, both a little lower than before.

I changed the two passwords on my system; and I changed the Windows Firewall to the default settings. I think the settings had been changed.

The two main problems I have now are that:
(1) Windows Firewall shows it's running when I first logon, but within about 30 seconds, it pops off to off (not running). I then turn it on manually and it seems to remain on, as I check it periodically. The same behavior for Administrator logon and my user logon (with admin authority).
Also, if I wait the approximate 30 seconds after logging on, before checking for the firewall, when I type "fire" in "Start-Search" field (bottom left of screen (Windows pearl), the Firrewall does not come up as a choice. I think this is true, but afraid to test it again.
Something is turning Windows Firewall off?

(2) In Services, SBSDWSCService (Security Center) is not running, although it is set to "Automatic Startup" Its dependency services as indicated in its properties are all running (DCOM Server Process Launcher, RPC Endpoint Mapper, RPC). I cannot change its startup type to "Automatic (Delayed Start)," nor can I start it. I get the error message:
"Windows could not start the SBSDWSCService service on local computer. Error 3: The system could not find the path specified."
Another message pops up just prior to that message but disappears too quickly for me to read.
The logon property is "Logon as this account" and its field is blank. "Password" and "Confirm password" fields contain asterisks (about 15 asterisks each).

Other Services phenomena are:
Software Protection set to "auto delayed" but is not running
Application Identity set to manual and is not running
Application Information set to manual and is not running

Computer Browser I set to manual. I think it had a different setting before.

Thank you very much.

Hello, after some reading I feel you should run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker and fix system files.

I scanned the computer several times with sfc. As I interpreted the results, only one item remains unrepaired, tcpmon. Is that the way the log below is to be interpreted? I think I could pursue a solution outside this forum to (1) this last system problem, as well as (2) figure out why my Windows Firewall is being turned off after about a minute after every boot (when I turn it back on it stays on.), and (3) getting my icons at the top back. Thank you for helping me. I think my computer is ok now. Do you agree?

Hello, you can persue that way or we need a deeper look. Please go here....
Preparation Guide ,do steps 6 - 9.

Create a DDS log and post it in the new topic explained in step 9,which is here Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs and not in this topic, thanks.
If Gmer won't run, skip it and move on.
Let me know if that went well.

Hello,

Now that you have posted a log here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/330489/naiadsystems-or-other-unknown-malware/ you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a MRT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the MRT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the MRT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the MRT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another MRT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

Please be patient. It may take several days to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible. I advise checking your topic once a day for responses as the e-mail notification system is unreliable.

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. Good luck with your log.

Orange Blossom
Help us help you. If HelpBot replies, you MUST follow step 1 in its reply so we know you need help.
