I appreciate any help I can get with this problem. When I search for anything in Google, all of the links that Google returns look valid. As soon as I click on one of the links it redirects me to adwords.onlinesecuregroup.com and then on to another unrelated site. The following is my DDS.txt log:

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Hi Gringo.

When I ran Combofix, it got to the screen:

"Scanning for infected files...
This typically doesn't take more than 10 minutes
However, scan times for badly infected machines may easily double"

and then I got the following message:

"Rootkit!!
Combofix has detected the prescence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot the machine"

I clicked OK and the machine rebooted and then Combofix starts to run on its own.

It gets to the same screen:

"Scanning for infected files...
This typically doesn't take more than 10 minutes
However, scan times for badly infected machines may easily double"

and never proceeds.

I also get a McAfee message that my computer is not fully protected.

If I close Combofix, my computer continues to boot up.

I tried running Combofix again after my computer finished booting and got the same results.

Greetings

It is most likely Mcafee causing problems. We are going to have to uninstall it to be able to move on. (you may reinstall Mcafee when we are complete)

uninstall some programs
    1. click on start
    2. then go to settings
    3. after that you need control panel
    4. look for the icon add/remove programs
    click on the following programs

    McAfee SecurityCenter

    and click on remove

update combofix

I would like you to download an updated virsion of combofix.
Delete the version of combofix you have now on your desktop and download a new one from here

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

    1. Close any open browsers.
    2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note:Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Now please download this antivirus and install it so you are protected while we finish.

Hi Gringo,

I uninstalled McAfee Security Center, downloaded the new version of Combofix after deleting the old version and then ran Combofix. I get the same results as before, without the McAfee message.

On bootup it gets to the same screen:

"Scanning for infected files...
This typically doesn't take more than 10 minutes
However, scan times for badly infected machines may easily double"

and never proceeds for hours.

After I close Combofix the computer continues booting up and the desktop icons become visible.

I finally got Combofix to run to completion. I had disabled IObit 360 Antispyware from running on startup about a month ago, but I noticed today that something related to this was still running in the Task Manager. I uninstalled IObit 360 and then reran Combofix, which worked. Here is the log:

ComboFix 10-07-06.05 - Bill 07/07/2010 17:57:48.6.1 - x86

This infection has the ability to steal passwords and send them to a remote location It would be very smart any online passwords that you have to change them as soon as possible

HelpAsst_mebroot_fix
  • Please download HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Close out all other open programs and windows.
  • Double click the file to run it and follow any prompts.
  • If the tool detects an mbr infection, please allow it to run mbr -f and shutdown your computer.
  • Upon restarting, please wait about 5 minutes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
    • helpasst -mbrt
  • Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
  • When it completes, a log will open.
  • Please post the contents of that log.

*Note*In the event the tool does not detect an mbr infection and completes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
  • mbr -f
  • Now, please do the Start>Run>mbr -f command a second time.
  • Now shut down the computer (do not restart, but shut it down), wait a few minutes then start it back up.
  • Give it about 5 minutes, then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
    • helpasst -mbrt
  • Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
  • When it completes, a log will open.
  • Please post the contents of that log.

**Important note to Dell users - fixing the mbr may prevent access the the Dell Restore Utility, which allows you to press a key on startup and revert your computer to a factory delivered state. There are a couple of known fixes for said condition, though the methods are somewhat advanced. If you are unwilling to take such a risk, you should not allow the tool to execute mbr -f nor execute the command manually, and you will either need to restore your computer to a factory state or allow your computer to remain having an infected mbr (the latter not recommended).

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

helpasst -cleanup

lets clean out help-asst
  • push the "windows key" + "R" (between the "Ctrl" button and "Alt" Button)
  • please copy and past the following into the box
CODE
helpasst -cleanup
  • click ok

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
Folder::
c:\documents and settings\Bill\Local Settings\Application Data\dxepvbjbx
c:\documents and settings\Bill\Local Settings\Application Data\hedwtknik

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. report from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Gringo

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.
If you don't like Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.
