I would greatly appreciate any help you could provide. I am running Windows XP - SP3. The system has slowed a lot and Internet Explorer keeps opening multiple windows on it's own. I receive a message at startup on a black screen " Invalid boot.ini" It continues to say it is booting from and it flashes off the screen before I can read it. I ran DDS and have included the two files it produced. When I attempt to run Gmer my system, or the program itself, locks up. After clicking on the GMER.exe file, it loads and then automatically begins a scan of /system then becomes "unresponsive". Once I got the blue screen after running GMER, and it read "STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000) The system has been shut down. A couple of other times GMER was "Not Responding". Once again thanks in advance for your assistance. I have enabled the email notification and set it to notify me immediately.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

Note** If you are having problems posting the complete log into this thread upload them here http://www.rapidshare.com/ and post the links in this thread

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

I order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Thank you very much for helping. I ran the scans you asked for and the results are below. A window opened during the scan and the blue bar at the top read "/s /i c:\windows\system32\FWDPjNDB.dll". In the window was "regsvr32" with an "OK" click box below it. I have done nothing with that it is still minimized. Another opened saying "6usq5Fx4.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvinience." Other than that everything ran fine.

Thanks again for the assistance.
Charlie

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Gringo,

Followed the instructions and I'm not sure what happened. When I started running Combofix I got the warning that recovery console was not installed and told it to install it. The next message I got was "Error c:\boot.ini is not correctly formatted." with an "OK" button. I hit OK and the Combofix continued running.

I left the computer running, and when I came back and there was a message on the screen saying "Windows cannot find '/idlist,:324:2516, c:\windows\system32: Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. So far I have found the "My Documents" folder is empty. Not sure what else is missing. I don't see any logfile for combofix and the icon for it is no longer on my desktop. Some of my programs are still installed, like the Iolo AV, but a lot of stuff is gone.

I shut it down last night and when I booted up this morning all my files appear to be back. The Combofix icon is back on the desktop, but still no report from Combofix. When I did as you asked above I got the message "Windows cannot find 'C:\Qoobox\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt'. Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again."

I looked in the folder c:\Qoobox and the only file not in a subfolder is a file named "LogA". I am not sure what type of file it is it just says file type "File". There was a subfolder "Quarantine" in c:\Qoobox. In that folder I found a text document named "catchme.log". The contents of that are posted below.

Thanks again for helping me out.

I got the same message ""Windows cannot find 'C:\ComboFix.txt'. Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again."

I'm not sure if it affected combofix but I have had a problem with a boot.ini error and combofix was unable to install the recovery console. It said boot.ini is not properly formatted. I have since used the instructions to manually install the recovery console. Should I just try to run combofix again from the beginning. I also looked up a way to fix the boot.ini using the windows disk, but I didn't want to do anything without first asking you because of your initial instructions.

Greetings

I think we will fix the boot.ini first

Download BootCheck.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click BootCheck.exe to run the check
  • When complete, a Notepad window will open with some text in it
  • Save the Notepad file to your desktop as BootCheck.txt
  • Copy the contents of BootCheck.txt and post it in your next reply

My AV program blocked me from downloading the bootcheck.exe saying it was a "password stealer". I deactivated the AV program and it gave me a 404 error when I tried to follow the link. I couldn't figure out a way to get around however it blocked that site. Anyway, I was able to use my windows disk and rebuild the boot.ini. I am no longer getting the invalid boot.ini error when I start up and the Recovery console is installed, and I am getting the option to use it at startup.

Greetings

Very good job

update combofix

I would like you to download an updated virsion of combofix.
Delete the version of combofix you have now on your desktop and download a new one from here

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

    1. Close any open browsers.
    2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note:Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. report from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now after running the script?
