Have been having fits with browser redirection and fake antivirus problems on several client computers. I have taken several machines back to factory using the built in image -- ctrl F11 on Dells -- but would like to try a quicker solution. I understand Combo fix is very effective in this area. I am working on a Dell Laptop running XP Home -- pretty new machine. User has been getting some browser redirects and his McAffee real time scanning is being forced off no matter what. I notice that disk management doesn't show the C: drive either. Not sure what else. I ran SuperAntiSpyware Free which located Disable.SecurityCenterOption and said it was fixed but it is still disabled. What do you recommend? I think I have all of the logs and attachments in place. Note that I am not connected with the problem computer. I am trying to keep that one isolated to avoid spreading whatever it has. Thanks

Gringo,
Since my first post -- which was done before I read the preparation instructions -- I have read the instructions and posted and attached the items you mention in your post. Is there a need to run these again? Nothing has changed on the computer and it is not being used. I am doing all of the posts on a different computer. I checked the immediate notification option and will be watching for instructions.

Thanks,

George McMichael

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Gringo,
I ran combo fix -- twice actually -- the first time I was not connected to the internet so I didn't get the recovery console loaded. I ran it again and got the console loaded just fine. The symptom I have been keying on was McAfee turning itself off as soon as I turn it on. It is still doing that. Another item appears to be corrected. When I went to Manage under my computer and went to disk management, I didn't see the C: drive at all. Now it is back. I also tried Ctrl F11 on reboot to see if I could get to the Dell PC Restore image before combo fix -- wasn't there -- now it's back and I am thinking that might be my best option in this case because the user has little or nothing stored on this machine. He would just have to reinstall a couple of Stock trade apps from the web to be back to normal. I would prefer a less radical option if you have one. Here is the contents of Combofix.txt.

Thanks

George McMichael
