Please help me interpret Hijack this. My computer has been acting a little funky lately. According, to some members, a Hijack This scan is a good start. Please help. I'm a little freaked out.

Hello rj1121,

Please avoid installing/uninstalling or updating any programs and attempting any unsupervised fixes or scans. This can make helping you impossible.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt.
Please post the contents of that document.

************

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:
http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti...&tag=button
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Ant...ware_d5756.html
http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire MBAM report (even if it does not find anything) in your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

************

Please perform a scan with Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner.
-- Requires free Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to be installed before scanning for malware as ActiveX is no longer being used.
-- This scan will not remove any detected file threats but it will show where they are located so they can be cleaned with other tools.
  • Vista users need to right-click the IE or FF Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar icons and Run As Administrator from the context menu.
  • Read the "Advantages - Requirements and Limitations" then press the ... button.
  • You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click the Run button. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions.
  • When the downloads have finished, you should see 'Database is updated. Ready to scan'. Click on the ... button.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked. By default, they should be. If not, please check them and click on the ... button afterwards:
    • Detect malicious programs of the following categories:
      Viruses, Worms, Trojan Horses, Rootkits
Spyware, Adware, Dialers and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Scan compound files (doesn't apply to the File scan area):
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under the Scan section. OK any warnings from your protection programs.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and do NOT use the computer while the scan is running. Keep all other programs and windows closed.
  • Once the scan is complete (the 'status' will show complete), click on View Scan Report and any infected objects will be shown.
  • Click on Save Report As... and change the Files of type to Text file (.txt)
  • Name the file KAVScan_ddmmyy (day, month, year) before clicking on the Save button and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste (Ctrl+C) the saved scan results from that file in your next reply.
-- Note: Some online scanners will detect existing anti-virus software and refuse to cooperate. You may have to disable the real-time protection components of your existing anti-virus and try running the scan again. If you do this, remember to turn them back on after you are finished.

Hello SifuMike,

I'm glad you replied and are on track to help me. I need it big time. 2 items of disclosure that I need to inform you about. I have run scans for rootkits especially GMER, rootkit revealer and rootrepeal since the time that I have posted my Hijack this log. It took a while for bleepingcomputer to get back to me and I was feeling pretty desperate about the situation. Secondly, Last night when I was surfing the web and I had a couple of excel files open, I heard a lot of processing going on in my unit and pulled up the task manager to see what was going on. A few minutes later, while having the TM open, I closed out of one of the excel files and the IE closed and a bunch of windows opened up. Multiple instances of Adobe and other applications just went wild on my PC. I shut down the computer and rebooted in safe mode and scanned with MBAM and Trend Micro's House Call. Neither found anything. When I ran the Kaspersky scan today it found four infections. I sort of flipped out and went to files and deleted them immediately. Later I realized that I went against bleepingcomputer protocol of doing something without your instruction. Sorry, I'm in a pretty high state of anxiety right now. I ran a Kaspersky scan again. Both before and after logs are included. I wanted to let you know everything that I have done and hope that it does not affect the course of action. Please let me know what I need to do from here on out. Attached are the following logs provided in your request.

Also, three questions:
1. There are no scan result differences when run in safe mode vs. regular is there?
2. I wonder why the second Kaspersky scanned a little less than the first one.
3. I'm having a hard time finding good quality info about the malware in the first Kaspersky scan.

Thanks. I'm waiting for your reply.

SifuMike,

I will do all of the things that you ask me to do once I get home. Once again I apologize for complicating things and I appreciate your help. I have three questions:

1. For the Kaspersky logs that I pasted, were those not the logs that you requested? Is there another log/report that I am not aware of? I followed your directions very closely. The files that I deleted were ones indicated as infected in the first Kaspersky log report.

2. According to the Screen317 log, is my firewall protection alright at the moment? You didn't indicate any corrections to it.

3. The GMER scan causes my computer to reboot during mid-scan. I don't think I will be able to get you a GMER. However, I do have a rootrepeal and a rootkit revealer scan. Would any of those be a valid substitute?

Please advise. And I appreciate it.

That log looks OK, but you should not have deleted the files. No, thats the only log.

I told you to post the Kaspersky log, not delete the files it found.

No way to tell now that they are deleted.

Yes, it is OK. Just turn on the firewall.

No, GMER is the prefered one. Make sure you run it the proper way. See below.

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

**********

If you having trouble running GMER, try running it in the Safe Mode.

QUOTE
How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop:

Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
Zip Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
Double click or on your desktop.
Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.

You may see this window. If you do, click No.

Click on and wait for the scan to finish.

Please double-click on the gmer.exe program.

Once you double-click the icon a Windows security warning may appear asking if you are sure you would like to run the program. If this warning appears, please click on the Run button to allow GMER to start.
If no warning appeared then you should just continue.

You will now see the main GMER window.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan, please click on the NO button.
We now need to configure GMER to not use some settings.
Please uncheck the following settings that we do not want in our scan.
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive, which is typically C:\
Show All (This is important, so do not miss it.)

When done, the screen should look similar to below.

Once your screen look similar to the above, click on the Scan button to scan your computer for rootkits. This may take a while, so please be patient. When it has finished you will be back at the main screen as shown below.

You now need need to save the rootkit scan report to your Desktop by clicking on the Save ... button as designated by the red arrow in the picture above.
A screen will open asking where you would like to save the report.
Click once on the Desktop button to change to the Desktop folder and then in the File name: field enter ark.txt.
Finally, press the Save button to save the report to your desktop.

Please post the GMER log (which you called ark.txt).

rj1121,

Microsoft announced that Windows Live OneCare would be discontinued on 30 June 2009 and will instead be offering users a new free anti-malware suite called Microsoft Security Essentials to be available before then.
However, virus definitions and support for OneCare will continue until your subscription expires.

Is your OneCare subscription still in effect? Or did it expire?

I have done some research on Windows Live OneCare.

If you have a current Windows Live OneCare then it appears that your windows XP firewall can be turned off as Windows Live OneCare Protection Plus is the security component in the OneCare suite.

It consists of three parts, one of them is a two-way firewall blocking both incoming and outgoing traffic, as opposed to that of Windows XP pre-service pack 2 that blocks only incoming traffic. A two-way firewall protects against trojan or other viral infections running on the local computer.

SifuMike,

I have done practically all of the "do to" list that you have requested from yesterday morning and afternoon.

1. All of the Adobe, Java, and browser updates have been performed.

2. Scanned with CKScanner (log provided).

3. Hijack This moved out of temp files and provided a new log.

4. I ran DeFogger (log provided).

5. I ran GMER again and it rebooted during mid-scan. I have googled this and found that I am not the only one with this problem. However, the scan did run smoother and it actually got past the two hour mark before it rebooted. I guess the defogger helped to some degree. I guess I could give it another shot tomorrow night if you would insist or prefer another course of action. Please advise.

6. My Windows firewall subscription is good until the end of the month. I am very aware of the upcoming expiration date. Thank you for the research.

rj1121,

Your very welcome.

When Microsoft Windows OneCare Live expires (or even before it expires), I recommend

you download the free

Avira AntiVir or
Avast or
AVG 9.0 antivirus

Personally, I use Avira AntiVir but other people prefer the other free AV's.

Products from all three vendors received the Virus Bulletin's VB100% award and certification for virus detection from ICSA Labs.

Never install more than one antivirus scanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give you problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!

Give GMER another try. Some computer have difficulty running it.
Be sure to run it in the Safe Mode and Please uncheck the settings that we do not want in our scan. (see my previous post on how to do that)

If GMER still does not run to copletion, then
download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.
  • Unzip the RootRepeal.zip file it to it's own folder. (If you did not use the "Direct Download" mirror to download RootRepeal).
  • Close/Disable all other programs especially your security programs (anti-spyware, anti-virus, and firewall) Refer to this page, if you are unsure how.
  • Physically disconnect your machine from the internet as your system will be unprotected.

Your Hijacakthis log looks clean, but lets look deeper.

To get an idea about the current condition of your computer download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Select Files and Folders created in last 3 months
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<info.txt (<
Note 1: The logs will be created in this folder: C:\rsit

Note 2: The tool takes not more than one minute to scan the system.

SifuMike,

Thanks for the helpful info on the antiviruses available. I have also done some research and have also decided that I will go to either Avira or Avast real soon.

1. I tried running GMER again, but with the usual result. Therefore, I went to the second option of rootrepeal. The log is provided.

2. I have run the RSIT scan. The two logs generated by the scan have been provided.

rj1121,

Please uninstall Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4
and HijackThis 2.0.2, as they are both out of date.

We will run ComboFix.

You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert.
It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an Malware Removal Expert, not for private use.

Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.
Please read Combofix's Disclaimer.
Further, ComboFix logs are not permitted outside the HijackThis forums and then only when requested by a HJT Team member.

You need to disable your Windows Live OneCare Antivirus before running ComboFix, as it will prevent it from running.

To disable Microsoft OneCare Antivirus:
Disconnect from the internet. If you are on a full-time connection such as DSL or cable, disconnect the network cable from the back of your system.
Open the Windows OneCare user interface
Click View or Change Settings
Click the Antivirus Tab
Click the radio button to turn the anti-virus off.

Note: If you already have a copy of ComboFix on your system it is essential that you delete it before downloading this copy.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

To work properly, you must install ComboFix on the Desktop. <==IMPORTANT

A caution -
Have no other programs running. Your Task Bar should be clear of any program entries including your Browser.
Do not run Combofix more than once.
Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

Post the ComboFix log. The log will be save as C:\ComboFix.txt

SifuMike,

Could you give me the approximate length of the setup and scan time. I'm going to try to fit it in before I have to be somewhere.

Thanks,
RJ1121

Thanks,

I see several items in your registry. ComboFix may remove them, if not we can fix them manually.
It is a powerful tool and is to be run only under the supersvision of a malware removal expert; it is not to be run on your own.
