Greetings!

After running TDSSKILLER my usb ports have stopped working! All attached devices are recieving power but are not being recognised. Device Manager is showing 7 USB with yellow(!)

ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2830,2831,2832,2834,2835
ICH8 Family USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 2836,283A

device status says
Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

I have tried different types of devices in each of the 3 USB ports on my laptop but nothing is present.
I cant enter my bios to check wether theyre being recognise either because my laptop screen is broken and im using a monitor!

on a lighter note, the virus has gone, thanks to Farbar of the this forum.

If anyone can help me id really appreciate it!
Thanks in advance!

Hi .

See Code 41 at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123.

USB controllers should reinstall upon reboot. I would uninstall the controllers and reboot the system...then test USB functionality.

Of course...another possibility is that the USB function has failed. That is easily overcome by installing a USB 2.0 controller card in any available PCI slot.

Hi forgot to say that ive tried uninstalling/reinstalling/rebooting/updating everything and nothing has worked.
Im really hoping this can be sorted out rather than resorting to the pci slot thing (can that even be done on my laptop?), after all 1 minute it was working and the next all usb ports stopped !

heres the DEVDIAG log anyway if anyone can help..

There are USB controller cards for laptops.

http://www.usb-ware.com/cards.htm

As for "sorting out" without installing a card...in my experience, USB issues that cannot be solved by uninstalling/reinstalling the USB controllers...are an indication that there is a hardware problem with the existing card/chip.

TDSSKILLER deleted a file called 'bcffc.sys' which just so happens to be in the upperfilters in registry editor for my USB ports. Thats when they stopped working....
its just gonna have to be a reinstall of windows unless anyone else has any ideas..
I just cant help thinkin that if it was so simple to delete my USB ports, it shouldnt be a massive task to get them back up and running again..

What's the make and model of your laptop?

Altho usb drivers are "native" to sp2/sp3 in windows xp, the chipset driver is not and may have been corrupted by the rootkit.

No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try.

thats long gone now, i dont think i even had a disk, i think it was a recovery partition when my hard drive set up with Vista on it. Would it be a case of getting the right kind of drivers then?

This seems worth pursuing but challenging to say the least.

I would try running windows as a repair disk first.

Are these the drivers i'd need if i WAS to reformat by the way? Im kind of thinking that itd be best to reinstall XP as id end up with a nice clean machine...?
I was thinking of TinyXP or something seeing that 90% of the use i get out of my laptop is for music production..
thanks
