Symptoms:

Laptop running very slowly. When online with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox a new window will open unexpectedly and go to websites I have never heard of. Sometimes when this happens my AVG anti-virus pops up a message warning of a virus. When I do Google searches and click on a link from Google it goes to a different website than the one it should go to. I have to copy the link and paste into my address bar to get to the site.

Attempted fixes:

I have Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D and AVG anti-virus on my machine. I have run each of these in normal and safe mode. I updated each one first. A couple of scans showed and cleared a couple of things, but I still have the symptoms I listed.

I have Hijack This on my machine, but don’t know how to interpret the results. I just ran Blacklight to look for rootkits, it found no hidden items ( not that I would know what I was doing if it did ).

I have created an image of my hard drive on an external USB hard drive, using DriveImage XML ( took 5 hours ). I also created the UBCD4Win CD using my XP installation CD and slipstreaming SP2 into the XP folder before making the image and burning the CD.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

Note** If you are having problems posting the complete log into this thread upload them here http://www.rapidshare.com/ and post the links in this thread

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

I order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit

This could allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC could be compromised and there is no way to be sure that your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Hi,

I started Combofix after reading the instructions page. After a couple of minutes it said it found a rootkit and was going to reboot, my desktop disapeared except for my wallpaper and then did nothing else, has not rebooted just sitting there with the wallpaper showing.

The instructions said it would disconnect from the internet, but the indicator light on the front of my laptop for the wireless card is still on and flashing sometimes indicating network activity. I am concerned about that because, per instructions, I disabled all of my anti-malware and anti-virus software.

As of this post it has been like this for 2 hours and 15 minutes. Should I just let it go? If I wanted to shut it down at this point, I may have to unplug it and just yank the battery out.

If I don't hear back from you I will do that later today. Maybe 2 more hours.

Thank you.

Hi,

When I started it back up my wall paper showed up and the Combofix window also. It backed up the registry again and is now scanning again. Should I let it continue or close it and do what you just said to do? It is doing more now than before, it shows that it is completing stage_1, stage_2

It didn't get that far before.

Ok,

I was posting from my wife's laptop, I am back on mine now. It seems to be running ok, too soon to tell if any errant IE windows are going to open, or if anything else is going on. I am still running without any malware protection though. That makes me nervous, can I re-enable them now?

Here is the Combofix log.

Hello

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

oh and yes you can turn on your security.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs
    1. click on start
    2. then go to settings
    3. after that you need control panel
    4. look for the icon add/remove programs
    click on the following programs

    Adobe Reader 8
    Java™ 6 Update 3
    ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker

    and click on remove

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.

Hi,

In the mean time I restarted my laptop to see how long it would take to start up. It had been taking about half an hour for it to completely start up with this infection on it. It started up faster this time, but still kind of slow about 15 mins.

I will uninstall what you said to and use the alternate pdf reader, never liked Acrobat anyway. Will update Java also.

I have to take a break before I do anymore work on this, my wife wants to go out. I may do more later tonight, if not tonight then tomorrow morning.

I will post back when I have done everything you said to do.

Thank you so much for the help so far. I am going to donate to the Combofix donate link. Is there anyother way to donate to Bleeping computer?

Hi,

I have been working on this pretty much since I got up today. I uninstalled and installed the things you said to.

I ran the 2 scans, I updated MBAM first. Between the 2 scans they took close to 4 hours.

As for how my computer is doing now, it still seems to be responding slowly.

Please give me your personal link I definately want make a contribution.

Here are the 2 logs.
