Just FYI, this is my first time trying one of these post-your-log virus removal forums. Here's a brief history of my struggle with this problem.

1. Symantec Antivirus detects and deletes Trojan.Zefarch in C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin\Local Settings\Application Data\{Random string}\chrome\content\. Detection occurs everytime I boot up Windows.

2. I run a full scan and Symantec reports Trojan.Zefarch in C:\Windows in file "[random string].dll". Symantec is only able to partially remove it.
3. I attempt a system restore which fails of course.
4. I follow Symantec website's removal instructions for Trojan.Zefarch-Disable System restore, Run a full system scan, delete some registry keys. This stop the virus detection notifications. Google and Yahoo links still redirect in Firefox though.
5. Both IE and Firefox are affected. I uninstall Firefox and reinstall it. The problem still persists in Firefox.
6. I run ATF Cleaner, then Goored.exe, which detects nothing in the registry.
7. I run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware software and it detects and removes 4 instances of Trojan.Hiloti in the registry, C:\Windows, and C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin\Local Settings\Temp\.
8. Google and Yahoo links still redirect.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi fishdontbounce,

Welcome to Malware Removal (VTSMR) forum. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (scanning or running other tools, updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might interfere with our fixes. In case of making changes I shall assume my assistance is not needed any more.

If the issue is not resolved please update me on the current condition of your computer. A brief description of the current issue is sufficient.

The logs are made 5 days before. Users don't run scans in between or do something and resolve the issue. As I mentioned I needed you to update me about the current issue. If the issue is still the same as you mentioned in your first post and the system is not changed the logs are still valid and I can base my intervention on them. Otherwise depending on your feedback abut the (changed) condition of the system at this moment I might ask you to provide me some logs to reflect those changes. So if you give me feedback about the last part of my previous post we can start. smile.gif

Since I posted those logs, I have only used my laptop for web browsing, i.e. routine email checking and youtube-ing. I have not voluntarily installed any new programs, made any manual changes to the registry, or run any virus/malware/spyware scan programs. Symantec antivirus software has autoupdate setup so it may have installed new virus definitions, but that's probably about it.

Another interesting thing I noticed is that whenever I run Spyware Blaster for the first time upon bootup, several hundred items for Mozilla Firefox are disabled, and I have to click enable all protection to fix that. This was usually not the case before I contracted the virus(es).

If you still would like updated logs, I can definitely provide those for you. Let me know!

Thank you for the update. No need for new logs. There is a rootkit infection we will take care of, update your Java and run an updated Malwarebytes just to make sure.

Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programs. These programs allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

Removal Instructions
  1. We are going to run this special tool.
    • Please download TDSSKiller.exe and save it to your desktop.
    • Run TDSSKiller.exe.
    • When it finished press any key to continue.
    • Let reboot if needed and tell me if it needed a reboot.
    • Also it makes a txt file on the C:\ directory (like TDSSKiller. Please attach it to your replay.

  2. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.
Download JavaRa from Javara for Java update or directly from here.
Use the tool to remove old and redundant versions of the Java Runtime Environment. The latest version is Java 6 update 20. Please uninstall any remaining versions if the tool could not uninstall them (look for any entry on Add/Remove that contains Java, JRE or Java Run Time), they are:

    Java™ 6 Update 17
    Java™ 6 Update 5
    Java™ 6 Update 7

  3. This small application you may want to keep and use to keep the computer clean.
    Download CCleaner from here http://www.ccleaner.com/
    • Run the installer to install the application.
    • When it gives you the option to install Yahoo toolbar uncheck the box next to it.
    • Run CCleaner. (make sure under Windows tab all the boxes of Internet Explorer and Windows explorer are checked. Under System check Empty Recycle Bin and Temporary Files. Under Application tab all the boxes should be checked).
    • Click Run Cleaner.
    • Close CCleaner.

  4. Open your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
    • First update it, to do that under the Update tab press "Check for Updates".
    • Under Scanner tab select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy&Paste the MBAM log.

    Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

  5. Tell me also how is your computer running.

1. TDSSKiller required a reboot to clean 1 system file.

2. I ran Javara which removed a bunch of items. I then removed Java 6 Update 17 from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. I was unsuccessful in removing Java 6 Update 7 from Add/Remove Programs so I went ahead and downloaded the JRE 6u7 installation file from sun.com and then this time I was able to remove it using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

3. I ran CCleaner as requested.

4. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware with the updated definitions detected nothing.

5. While it was infected, my computer was running normally offline. The only problems I was experiencing were search engine redirecting in both Mozilla and IE, and also random popups in Mozilla. I did not notice the random popups in IE, but I also did not use IE very much.

Currently, it is still running normally offline. Online has improved. Google does not seem to be redirecting anymore nor am I receiving random popups. I tested Google by entering a search string and clicked on all of the links on the first page, and all led me to the proper website. The only anomaly that I have yet to figure out is the disabled Mozilla Firefox protection in Spywareblaster on bootup. I always have to manually enable the protection. It could have something to do with my uninstalling & reinstalling Mozilla Firefox in my initial attempts at curing my infection. I'm thinking perhaps an uninstall & reinstall of Spywareblaster may solve this issue.

Another concern is in Mozilla under Add-ons, Java Deployment Toolkit has an exclamation point next to it with "Known to cause security or stability issues." underneath. I believe it is currently enabled since the disable button can be clicked on. I should also mention that prior to the changes you instructed me to do, Mozilla had once given me a warning message stating that this Add-on would be disabled since it was causing trouble. I'm unsure as to how to remove this Add-on (or any Mozilla Add-ons for that matter). Any suggestions as to how to deal with this?

The rootkit infection is taken care of. thumbup2.gif

Open Firefox and make sure of the following settings:

Tools => Options => Content:
"Block pop-up windows is checked". Click "Exceptions ..." to make sure it is empty.
Load images automatically is checked. Click "Exceptions ..." to make sure it is empty.

Under Security tab:
"Warn me when sites try to install add-ons" is checked. Click Exceptions ..." to make sure it is empty.
"Block reported attack sites" should be checked.
"Block reported web forgeries" should be checked.

Now under Tools => Add-ons:
Under plug-ins tab you should be enable or disable any plugin.
under Extensions tab you can select the extension you want to uninstall and press Uninstall.

See if this changes anything, otherwise we will run another tool to make sure.

Phew, great! That wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

The Firefox settings you suggested were already set as you described. Under Tools => Add-ons: Extensions tab, there is nothing installed (I uninstalled all the Java items). Spywareblaster is still the same as described before. Perhaps we can try the other tool?

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with the tool. (Information on A/V control HERE)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • You will get a warning about the not trusted download sites for ComboFix, click Yes.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please copy and paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Argh now I have another problem. Combofix had to disable my drive emulation through a reboot, and now Daemon Tools Lite produces the following error message: "This program requires at least Windows 2000 with SPTD 1.51 or higher. Kernel debugger must be deactivated." Any ideas on how to fix this? I've already done some googling and found some complicated procedures that I'm not sure is for me: http://daemonpro-help.com/en/problems_and_...oblems.html#top.

Go to start > Run copy/paste the following line in the run box and click OK.

sc config sptd start= boot

Reboot now and see if the problem is resolved.

We need to check this, if everything is OK you should reinstall the program.

Please run Notepad (start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad) and copy and paste the text in the code box (without the word CODE) into a new file:

sc query sptd >log.txt
sc qc sptd >>logtxtx
START log.txt

  • Go to the File menu at the top of the Notepad and select Save as.
  • Select Save in: desktop
  • Fill in File name: look.bat
  • Save as type: All file types (*.*)
  • Click save.
  • Close the Notepad.
  • Locate look.bat on the desktop. It should look like this:
  • Double-click to run it.
  • A notepad opens, copy and paste the content (log.txt) to your reply.
