Do I need to buy the software to update it?
Does the $25 version come with lifetime use and can it be installed in all my laptops/computers? I mean, do I need to get license separately for each machine that I have? For the family we have three laptops and a desktop - and I intend to buy one or two more (netbooks perhaps) in about six months.

What software are you referring to? Usually, if you have to pay for a licence, that activation is necessary to receive updates for the product, and a separate licence is required for each machine. It's hard to tell without all the info.
