Hoping for some help here....

I have a laptop running XP that has been infected by some sort of virus. After restarting a warning box comes up saying "Security Warning.....Application cannot be executed....the file wscntfy.exe is infected....Do you want to run your AV software?" I cannot get rid of this prompt and IE launches various websites as well.

I have run a Malwarebytes scan and it found 4 infected files which I deleted and restarted the PC. This did not work.

Is there a way to remove the virus without completely reinstalling the system software?

I am a Mac user myself and I don't have much experience with PC's so I apologize for the noob status.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Moved from XP to Am I Infected forum ~ Hamluis.
