Recently, my computer has been restarting randomly whenever it wants to. I have no idea what has been causing this problem, but it is quite the annoyance. Hell, it could restart now if it wanted to, i'll be lucky if i get this thing posted before it restarts again. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you. Here is my hijack this log:

Hello marco d and welcome to BleepingComputer.

First let's see if we can stop it from auto-rebooting. Right click on My Computer and select Properties. Open the Advanced tab then click on "Settings" under startup and Recovery. Under System Failure, be sure "Automatically Restart" is UNchecked.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Download Hoster.zip.
- Unzip hoster.zip into it's own folder.
- Don't use it yet.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\msagent\doswave.dll
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):C:\WINDOWS\msagent\evawsod.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://wkhbjhipyjdokyqyjlivr.com/oc_SyWjM/...EcBdMf/OuB.html

    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44} - C:\WINDOWS\msagent\doswave.dll (file missing)

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: doswave - C:\WINDOWS\msagent\doswave.dll(file missing)
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Navigate to and run Hoster.
- Press 'Restore Original Hosts' and press 'OK'
- Exit Program.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

hello again,

thanks so much for the reply... now here's the update:

I followed your instructions perfectly, but the O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44} - C:\WINDOWS\msagent\doswave.dll (file missing) did not appear in hijackthis when i ran it in safe mode. However, I ran hijack this just now, and it appeared. That's odd.

Secondly, when I ran activescan, the computer rebooted during the scan. This happens whenever I try to scan my computer. I've tried many methods: AVG scan, adaware scan, spybot scan, but the computer ALWAYS reboots during the scan. Something must be preventing the computer from scanning or something.

All the other instructions were followed correctly. Now, here's the new hijackthis log, again with the O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44} - C:\WINDOWS\msagent\doswave.dll (file missing) present, but not present in safe mode:

Were you able to do this:

Right click on My Computer and select Properties. Open the Advanced tab then click on "Settings" under startup and Recovery. Under System Failure, be sure "Automatically Restart" is UNchecked.

?

In normal mode,

Start HJT and click on the SCAN button. Put a check mark in front of the following lines if they still show:

hi again,

in response to your question, yes, i was able to uncheck "automatically restart" but the computer still felt the need to restart during the activescan.

But with good news, here's a new hijackthis log, and it appears all three files are now gone:

Currently, the HijackThis log is clean. Yes, try again to get the ActiveScan to complete, and post the log if you can.

If no luck there, let's see if we can get an Ewido scan to complete:

Download and install the trial version of Ewido Security Suite.
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
- Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
- The program will now go to the main screen.
- On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
- Click on Start.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Run Ewido Security Suite:
- Click on scanner.
- Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
- You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
- Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
- Click Save report.
- Save the report to your desktop.

Post back with either the ActiveScan or Ewido reports if you can get them.

Do the restarts follow any pattern? Do they occur only when you are online, or when you are doing a specific activity? The restarts may be hardware related, particularly if they happen randomly and there is no error message preceeding the reboot. We can continue to dig to be sure there are no malware issues, but you may also want to post this problem in the Hardware Forum.

hey again,

well...I downloaded ewido suite and followed all instructions, but yet again, the computer rebooted in the midst of the scan. It's hopeless!

Yes, it does restart unexpectedly and without an error message. But I have no idea how it can be a hardware problem because no new hardware has been installed onto this computer!

Well, thanks for your help, I think I may take your advice and post in the hardware forum and see if they can solve the problem. Thanks again

I'll keep this thread open for awhile if you need to post back to it.

As for the hardware, the first step will probably be to remove and reseat all the cards and cables in the machine. They can occasionally become intermittant and removing/replacing wipes the contacts clean. But the hardware guys are the experts on that aspect.
