Hello, Seems that this browser/search engine redirect problem is getting a lot of press. I've read a bunch and tried many removal applications, but to no avail. Time to come to the experts. Please help another poor lost soul! Thx, Knock

Below is the DDS.txt and the Attach.txt file is attached per instruction (except attached file not zipped, sorry...didn't know how and the file seemed small)

Hi Knock312,

Welcome to Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal (VTSMR) forum. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (scanning or running other tools, updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might interfere with our fixes. In case of making changes I shall assume my assistance is not needed any more.
  1. We are going to run this special tool.
    • Please download TDSSKiller.exe and save it to your desktop.
    • Run TDSSKiller.exe.
    • When it finished press any key to continue.
    • Let reboot if needed and tell me if it needed a reboot.
    • Also it makes a txt file on the C:\ directory (like TDSSKiller.2.3.2.0_Date_Time_log.txt). Please attach it to your replay.

  2. Please run DDS and post a fresh DDS.txt and attach the Attach.txt without zipping to your reply.
To attach a file to your reply the ADDREPLY, under the reply window press Browse... show the path to the file on your computer. Highlight the file and click Open then press the green UPLOAD button.

Thank you farbar for taking the lead on assisting me in solving my problem. I've done what you asked:
Ran TDSSKiller and attached it's data file and
Ran DDS and posted the DDS.txt file below while attaching the Attach.txt file

BTW, at the end of running TDSSKiller, I needed to press "y" to answer the question on rebooting at that time.

Have yet to check if redirecting is fixed...awaiting your direction.

Thx again,
Knock

The rootkit is taken care of and the redirection should have been stopped. thumbup2.gif
  1. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.
Download JavaRa from Javara for Java update or directly from here.
Use the tool to remove old and redundant versions of the Java Runtime Environment. The latest version is Java 6 update 20. Please uninstall any remaining versions if the tool could not uninstall them (look for any entry on Add/Remove that contains Java, JRE or Java Run Time), they are:

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 12
Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1_06
    Java™ 6 Update 14
    Java™ 6 Update 2
    Java™ 6 Update 3
    Java™ 6 Update 5
    Java™ 6 Update 7

  2. Run CCleaner (make sure under Windows tab all the boxes of Internet Explorer and Windows explorer are checked. Under System check Empty Recycle Bin and Temporary Files. Under Application tab all the boxes should be checked). Then click run cleaner.

  3. Optional: The following sites are set to the safe zone. It means that the traffic created by these sites won't be checked by security checkpoints any more. While these site are safe to visit they might not be safe all the time and their traffic better pass through the security checkpoint:

    Trusted Zone: bettertrades.com
    Trusted Zone: bobeldridge.com
    Trusted Zone: centra.com
    Trusted Zone: darlenenelson.com
    Trusted Zone: dedicatedtrader.com
    Trusted Zone: intuit.com
    Trusted Zone: intuit.com\ttlc
    Trusted Zone: liveduvalstreet.tv
    Trusted Zone: markaylatimer.com
    Trusted Zone: ryanlitchfield.com
    Trusted Zone: turbotax.com

If you decided to remove these sites from the trusted zone do the following:
    • Open Internet Explorer.
    • Under Tools menu select Internet Options.
    • Under Security tab select
    • Click on Sites and select the sites in the web sites: box then Click Remove.
    • Click Close and OK.

  4. Open your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
    • First update it, to do that under the Update tab press "Check for Updates".
    • Under Scanner tab select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy&Paste the MBAM log.

    Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

  5. Tell me also how is your computer running.

farbar, addressing your latest post in reverse order:

#5: Your work fixed my problem...Thank You farbar thumbup.gif

#4: I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware; no issues, MBAN log pasted below as requested.

#3: Deleted 7 trusted zones, keeping only centra.com, intuit.com, intuit.com\ttic, and turbotax.com

#2: Ran CCleaner with all recommended boxes checked. I did not click "fix issues" seen after a "Registry" scan. The application returned 96 issues under 10 topics (such as Missing Shared DLL (12), Unused File Extension (29), Open with Application Issue (16), Invalid Default Icon (11), etc.) If you care to answer, what is your opinion on letting CCleaner auto fix registry issues? (Not meant to be a loaded question!)

#1: Ran JavaUpdate. Update must have removed Java ™ 6 Update 14 as that was the only Java ™ file not listed when I used Add/Remove to delete the other Java ™ files.

Again, thank you for helping me. What a GREAT service you provide!

Knock

You are most welcome and thank you for your kind words Knock. smile.gif

The registry part of CCleaner I have found pretty safe, still its use should be minimized. This is my personal opinion and many experts at Bleeping Computer strongly oppose to using any registry cleaner and they believe the registry clutters don't do any harm and using registry cleaners might damage the system beyond repair.
  1. You may delete any tool or log we used from your computer.

  2. First Set a New Restore Point then Remove the Old Restore Points to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

To set a new restore point:
    • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
    • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next".
    • Give the Restore Point a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.

To remove the old restore points:
    • Go to Start > Run then type: Cleanmgr in the box and click "OK".
    • You get a window to select the drive to clean, the default is already set to (C:) drive. Click OK.
    • Click the "More Options" Tab.
    • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
    • Click OK and Yes.

Happy Surfing Knock. smile.gif
