Thank you in advance for all the generous expertise you provide to restore our lives to functionality.

The Google Redirect problem remains following efforts more than one month ago to remove the Personal Security Virus though I no longer recall what I did though I followed online directions.

I have been unable to utilize IE for a year and use Mozilla Firefox without difficulty.

To prepare this post, in order to perform Windows Update, I installed IE8 without difficulty. However, once again, I cannot get it to function. Prior versions of IE were removed before and, to be prudent, today. Windows Update was not able to be performed.

Efforts to obtain a GMER scan failed. Upon my right click on Gmer.zip, I have no EXTRACT ALL option so I opened the zip and worked from Gmer.exe and followed instructions from Bleeping Computer. Each scan was interrupted after many minutes by a spontaneous reboot. The first reboot resulted in loss of my IP address. After I restored the IP address, the second reboot resulted in loss of function of my cordless mouse. Plugging in a mouse restored mouse capability.

Thank you again.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

Note** If you are having problems posting the complete log into this thread upload them here http://www.rapidshare.com/ and post the links in this thread

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

I order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Thank you so much, Gringo.

Additional symptoms to describe include:
1) When I reboot, I lose my IP Address and must manually set up an IP address. That requires a re-boot and, then, the IP address is not lost. If I reboot later, the IP address is lost again;
2) When I use my computer for a full day, my sound device is no longer recognized. When I reboot, that self-corrects.

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit

This could allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC could be compromised and there is no way to be sure that your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
1) I failed to tell you earlier that my sys-tray had vanished;
2) ComboFix encouraged me to upgrade to a newer version than downloaded from bleepingcomputer.com;
3) Did what I could to disable Avira from PROGRAMS (no sys-tray) but toward the end of the procedure, it located something; I selected "ignore it";
4) Rebooted for "rootkit activity" and took a very long time to shutdown from desktop;
5) Deleted folders and then rebooted once again;
6) Once completed, I clicked on your URL and it opened with IE8. I have been unable to use any IE for more than one year resulting from trying to uninstall Norton Pro which caused substantial damage to my system;
7) My cursor is blinking and, in sync with my blinking cursor, my letters are typing.... long after I have pressed the keyboard.

Until I reboot and, if still necessary, until I try to adjust my mouse setting and adjust my toolbars, etc., I will not know how my system is functioning. I will do those things after sending this to you and will report on the functioning when you ask that I do.

Thank you again.

Gringo.....

Quick update:

I have not rebooted.

I made Firefox my default browser.

Google functions correctly now and no longer redirects!

My mouse is fine. It required no adjustment. I merely unselected the toolbars that were all checked in IE8, opened Firefox, returned to this log on IE8 that I had not closed and the mouse is functioning normally.

I failed to mention that Firefox has not saved a home page for a long time and, instead, sent me to a blank page. That, too, appears to have been repaired.

I am very pleased.

I do not know how to change the many hundreds of passwords that I have saved in order to deal with the issue you brought to me attention regarding the Backdoor Trojan.

My systray has only my OE icon and the time.

I must make certain that I have anti-viral, spyware and firewall enabled.

Thank you.

Hello

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs
    1. click on start
    2. then go to settings
    3. after that you need control panel
    4. look for the icon add/remove programs
    click on the following programs

    Adobe Reader 9.3.2
    Coupon Printer for Windows
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_02
    Java Web Start
    Java™ 6 Update 13
    Java™ 6 Update 2
    Java™ 6 Update 3
    Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
    LoudMo Contextual Ad Assistant
    Viewpoint Media Player

    and click on remove

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.
If you don't like Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.

Clear your Java Cache
  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
        Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):
  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :
I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan

Go Eset web page to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • click on the ESET Online Scanner button
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
    • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options
Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log From MBAM
    2. Log From ESET Online Scanner
    3. let me know of any problems you may have had
    4. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Hi, Gringo, my new most important best friend )

I got here before receiving your notification e-mail so I will follow you recent instructions. I wanted to tell you that windows now reveals 18 updates for me and I ignored them but I did update Spybot which had many. Perhaps I need to sit on my hands until you tell me further.

Off to continue! Thank you so much!

1) Please know that no e-mail notifications have ever been received other than your initial two.
2) Adobe Photoshop is not an option from that link. McAfee now is.
3.) MBAM did not give me a 'Show Results' but just opened the log. I had no options so I could onlt copy and paste the log for you.

Thank you.

ESET online scanner - directions provided are not exactly what is presented on the program but there were no overwhelming obstacles.

Computer is working very crisply and cleanly. HUGE difference. Responsive, peppy, no Google redirect issues; none of the prior issues.

On instruction to remove prior versions of Adobe Reader, found none. Were other Adobe products in my Add/ Rmove Programs. Was unsure so I left those.

The ESET scan has been on 34% for a very long time. The number of files scanned has not changed either but the target has changed. So, I'll head to bed and, if in the middle of the night, I awaken to find that it's still at 34%, I'll start it again. Otherwise, I'll contact you with the results in the morning.

I can never thank you enough!

Sorry for the confusiin. From the instructions above:
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

I just wanted to update you that Adobe Photoshop is not offered as an add-on but McAfee is.

if you still have problems then try this one

:Kaspersky scan:
Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
    • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
    • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
    • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
    • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
        Archives
        Mail databases
    • Click on My Computer under Scan.
    • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
    • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
    • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
    • Please post this log in your next reply.

Sorry to post prior to having the log but I wanted to thank you. The other scan was working but was on 34% for more than an hour.

This scan is still updating for almost that long.

So, I will return in the morning after ZUMBA! class!

Thank you so much!
