I have been having issues for about 2 weeks with constant browser redirects to random sites. I happens with both IE and Firefox. It is especially bad when trying to navigate search engine results. Lately I have been running Virus scans nightly and atleast once a day a trojan shows on my machine (probably from the random sites).

Hi mike 42,

Welcome to Malware Removal (VTSMR) forum. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (scanning or running other tools, updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might interfere with our fixes. In case of making changes I shall assume my assistance is not needed any more.

If the issue is not resolved please update me on the current condition of your computer.

Thanks. I haven't installed/removed anything since the post. I do continue to run nightly virus scans but other than that I try to limit my use.

exact same problem as initially listed. All search engine results link to random sites no matter which browser I use. Sometimes it happens on sites other than search engines. Visting the random sites seem to down load viruses. My virus software finds a new virus and removes it almost daily.

There are multiple infections on the log. We are going to take care of the DNS hijacker then disinfect system from rootkit infection.

Please do the steps fully and in the order they are written and provide feedback about them.
  1. Please make sure of the following settings:
    • Go to start => Control panel => Double-click Network and Sharing Center.
    • In the left window select Manage network Connection.
    • In the right window right-click your default connection (for wired connection Local Area connection is the default) and select Properties .
    • Internet Protocol Version 6 (IP6v) should be checked. Double-click on it: Make sure of the following settings:
      • The option Obtain an IP address automatically should be checked.
      • The option Obtain DNS server address automatically should be checked.
    • Click OK.
    • Internet Protocol Version 4 (IP4v) should be checked. Double-click on it.
      • The option Obtain an IP address automatically should be checked.
      • The option Obtain DNS server address automatically should be checked.
    • Click OK twice.

  2. Please run Notepad (start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad) and copy and paste the text in the code box (without the word CODE) into a new file:

    CODE
    @ECHO OFF
    reg delete HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters /v NameServer /f
    reg delete HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{9EAA7496-ACDE-4A1B-AE86-077AC6F6C651} /v NameServer /f

    • Go to the File menu at the top of the Notepad and select Save as.
    • Select Save in: desktop
    • Fill in File name: fix.bat
    • Save as type: All file types (*.*)
    • Click save.
    • Close the Notepad.
    • Locate fix.bat on the desktop. It should look like this:
    • Right-click to run it as administrator.
    • A window flashes, this is normal.

  3. Now reboot your computer.

  4. Run fix.bat as administrator again.

  5. We are going to run this special tool.
    • Please download TDSSKiller.exe and save it to your desktop.
    • Run TDSSKiller.exe.
    • When it finished press any key to continue.
    • Let reboot if needed and tell me if it needed a reboot.
    • Also it makes a txt file on the C:\ directory (like TDSSKiller.2.3.2.0_Date_Time_log.txt). Please attach it to your replay.

  6. Please run DDS and post a fresh DDS.txt to your reply. No need for the Attach.txt

I ran all of the steps you suggested.

The IPv6 was fine (both set to auto)
The IPv4 was has the optain DNS set to an IP address so I set both to auto
No other issues when running the steps

Here is the DDS

    • To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista).
    • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
    • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).

  2. Run CCleaner (make sure under Windows tab all the boxes of Internet Explorer and Windows explorer are checked. Under System check Empty Recycle Bin and Temporary Files. Under Application tab all the boxes should be checked). Then click run cleaner.

  3. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these locations:
    malwarebytes.org
    majorgeeks.com
    • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy&Paste the MBAM log.

    Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

GooredFix removed the remaining infection. thumbup2.gif

The active malware is taken care of and you should have no redirection or malware related issues.

Now I would like to make sure there is nothing left which can potentially reinfect the computer.
  1. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.
Download JavaRa from Javara for Java update or directly from here.
Use the tool to remove old and redundant versions of the Java Runtime Environment. The latest version is Java 6 update 20. Please uninstall any remaining versions if the tool could not uninstall them (look for any entry on Add/Remove that contains Java, JRE or Java Run Time), they are:

    Java™ 6 Update 17
    Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

  2. I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
    • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
      ESET OnlineScan
    • Click the button.
    • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
      • Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
      • Double click on the icon on your desktop.
    • Check
    • Click the button.
    • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
    • Check
    • Push the Start button.
    • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
    • When the scan completes, push
    • Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
    • Push the button.
    • Push

A log file will be saved here: C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Online Scanner\log.txt

It looks good. thumbup2.gif
  1. You may delete any tool or log we used from your computer.

  2. First Set a New Restore Point then Remove the Old Restore Points to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

To set a new restore point:
    • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
    • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next".
    • Give the Restore Point a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.

To remove the old restore points:
    • Go to Start > Run (alternatively you can press Wiindows ke+R key) then type: Cleanmgr in the box and click "OK".
    • You get a window to select the drive to clean, the default is already set to (C:) drive. Click OK.
    • Click the "More Options" Tab.
    • Under "System Restore and Shadow copies" section click "Clean Up" to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
    • Click OK and Yes.

  3. I recommend installing this small application for safe surfing: Javacools© SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
    • Download and install it.
    • Update it manually by clicking on Updates in the left pane and then Check for Updates.
    • Then enable all the protections by clicking on Protection Status on the left pane. Then click on Enable All Protection.
    • The free version doesn't have an automatic update. Update it once in two or three weeks and enable all protection again.

Happy Surfing mike. smile.gif
