Hello, I am trying to fix my brother's computer which I am pretty sure is infected with something. The computer cannot access the internet via browser (my guess is because the [problem] is causing all active processes to use up so many resources that an active connection cannot be established). However, virus scanning programs or the like can still update via internet if I connect to the internet via Ethernet. However, web browsing is still impossible.

I have run the following in safe mode to find any viruses and clean them out to no avail of fixing this problem:

Grisoft AVG Anti-Virus Free
Avira Antivir
Lavasoft Ad-Aware

Thus I have come to Hijack this.

Below is the DDS.txt & Hijackthis log file while Attach.txt is attached to this post.

Hello, and welcome.gif to the Malware Removal forum! My online alias is Blade Zephon, or Blade for short, and I will be assisting you with your malware issues!

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

Before we begin cleaning your machine, I'd like to lay out some guidelines for us to follow while we are working together.
  • I will be assisting you with your malware issues. This may or may not resolve other problems you are having with your computer. If you are still having problems after your machine has been determined clean, I will be glad to direct you to the proper forum for assistance.
  • Even if things appear better, that does not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions until I give you the all clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that all the malware has been removed. If a piece of the infection is left, it can regenerate and reinfect your machine.
  • Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • I ask that you please refrain from running tools other than those I suggest to you while I am cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so I know what is going on with the machine at any time. If you act independently it will cause changes to your system that I will not be aware of, which will make the process of cleaning the machine a much slower and more difficult process. Additionally, some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.
  • Please perform all steps in the order received. If you are unsure or confused about any instructions I give you, you should ask me to clarify before doing anything. Additionally, if you run into any problems while carrying out instructions, you should STOP and reply back here explaining what happened.
  • After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed. If you need additional time, that is perfectly alright; you just need to let us know beforehand. smile.gif
***************************************************

Please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.log" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and copy/paste its contents in your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try unchecking the Devices box in addition to the others previously requested. Also, try running GMER in Safe Mode.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

I am posting this from my computer since my brother's computer (infected machine) cannot access the internet. Consequently, it seems the virus may have jumped to my machine also since the processese shown in task manager seem to be outputting weird numbers for Mem Usage. Would I have to make a new topic to help clean my PC also or could I follow the same steps?

Hello.

Each fix I or another helper devises is created with the particular infected machine in mind. Consequently, it can be extremely dangerous to repeat these steps on another machine, as each system is unique.

That being said. . . if your computer begins to experience the same symptoms as your brother's, I will gladly help you clean it from this topic after we have finished with the first computer.

However, before we do anything else we shall take steps to prevent the malware from easily transferring between the two machines. (I'm assuming that you're using USB drives to move files back and forth.)

Please run the following program on your clean computer (in this case your computer) before proceeding.

Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well. <-- THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!
  • Hold down the Shift key when inserting the drive until Windows detects it to keep autorun.inf from executing if it is present.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: As part of its routine, Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that was plugged in when you ran it. Do not delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection by keeping the autorun file from being installed on the root drive and running other malicious files.

***************************************************

Note that all other tools are to be run on the infected machine unless specifically directed otherwise.

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to renamed.exe before saving it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • VERY IMPORTANT: Disable all running antivirus, antimalware and firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix. Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. NOTE: This list is not all-inclusive. If yours is not listed and you do not know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Double click on renamed.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

The infected computer cannot connect to the internet so the recovery console was not installed, however, I ran the scan in safe mode to hopefully somewhat compensate.

Also, AVG was not enabled during the scan. The entire folder, excluding 1 .dll & a few files from the "toolbar" folder was deleted after an uninstall failed.

Hello

1. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

CODE
DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride =
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer =

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

2. Close any open browsers.

3. VERY IMPORTANT: Disable all running antivirus, antimalware and firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix. Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. NOTE: This list is not all-inclusive. If yours is not listed and you do not know how to disable it, please ask.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

~Blade

First off, thank you for all of your help Blade. I will be sure to refer people I know to this website if they have any problems. The problem with my brother's internet has been fixed thanks to you, however, I know we have not finished the process. My brother was satisfied with the results so far so he has taken his laptop back. His laptop is running a lot smoother and I advised him that there might be a problem if he doesn't allow the process we have running go to completion. If there was something I could give you besides mine and my brother's gratitude I would. I hope your college ventures go well.

Also, regarding my computer, I am going to reformat since I want a fresh start. However, if the problem persists (because of backed up files being infected possibly) I know the expertise of this forum can help me solve the viral problem.

Again, thank you for everything.

Happy 4th of July!
