I will try to be succinct and detailed. I apologize if one of those goes awry.

While downloading new custom content for my Sims game (yes, from a reliable person in a reliable way, no to strange .exes and other stupidity), I got a popup window from an antivirus scanner that isn't installed on my computer. (It did have a pretty good rendition of the quad-color windows shield, but I'm not buying that.) This was followed with maybe a half-dozen balloon windows coming from a new icon on my toolbar--such-and-such is infected. Do you want to scan now?--and the like. I started closing down everything I had opened, and saw that the first window wouldn't close. I ran Norton's Quick Scan. It found nothing wrong. Obviously, I didn't believe that. I double-checked: yes, my Firewall was still intact.

I started a Full Scan with Norton, and opened up System Mechanic to see what it said about the Firewall. The new icon said I couldn't open it because it "was infected". I set about digging in Norton's history to find an attack or other information that could help me find and quarantine whatever was going on. There were nearly 40 "intrusion attempts" by "91.212.226.59" all of them blocked. Application path on the most recent is \DEVICE\HARDDISKVOLUM1\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SVCHOST.EXE. While searching for this, Internet Explorer windows repeatedly opened, all of them heading for one of three sites: porno.org, viagra.com, or adult. (org? com? I don't remember as it wasn't as laughable as the first two).

I also found "nlujixatssd.exe" which had installed itself about the time I got the bogus antivirus message. It had placed itself as C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\lihasjjxk\nlujixatssd.exe. I manually quarantined it, and stopped the full scan. I had Norton scan both the .exe and the file it was in. Nothing. I restarted the scan, but knowing it would take far longer than my patience, tried to run System Mechanic again. It opened (hooray!), and said that my both my firewall and other security settings were still fine. I ran its quick scan, and it found nothing. (Nor, eventually, did the Norton Full Scan.) Obviously, they were wrong. After I quarantined the nlu...exe, Internet Explorer would no longer open. (Balloon message from the new icon said it was infected and wouldn't be allowed to run.) However, all strange messages, including the "you are infected, would you like to scan now?" messages stopped, as did the IE windows to nefarious places.

My fiance is much better with computers than I, so when he came home last night, he did a bit of research...
The address attacking me is from Russia. He found a few utilities to erase whatever malware and/or rootkit had arrived and applied them. The new icon and all messages are gone. IE works. Given the ferocity of the thing, he doesn't think it's completely gone, and so sent me here.

I've followed the steps on your prep. guide. The DDS log follows. The first time I tried to run the GMER program, my computer automatically rebooted itself after less than a minute of the scan. The second and third times, the computer rebooted immediately after I pressed the scan button. The fourth time, I managed to take a screenshot before the rebooting. It has extra lines in the main window and no other devices than the C drive in the right-hand boxes to check. I did a quick search, and found advice in another thread to try running it in safe mode. I did, and have watched it run for the last 8 hours. (YE GODS! I know I have an old, and slow-ish computer, but !!)

If I've left anything out, or am not making myself clear, please let me know. Thanks so much for any input!

I see that Combofix has been run on this system.

Please note: ComboFix is an extremely powerful tool which should only be used when instructed to do so by someone who has been properly trained. ComboFix is intended by its creator to be "used under the guidance and supervision of an expert." It is NOT for private use. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer.

Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

Please uninstall the program as follows

Uninstall ComboFix

Remove Combofix now that we're done with it.
  • Disable any realtime antivirus or antispyware programs.
  • Please press the Windows Key and R on your keyboard. This will bring up the Run... command.
    (For Vista/Windows 7 please click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Run)
  • Now type in Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. (Notice the space between "Combofix" and "/")
  • Please follow the prompts to uninstall Combofix.
  • You will then receive a message saying Combofix was uninstalled successfully once it's done uninstalling itself.
This will uninstall Combofix and anything associated with it.

Next please download a new copy, agreeing to any updates when asked.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Comfix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

m0le,

Fiance is the one who ran ComboFix in his quest to save the computer. (Picture knight on white stallion here.)

Following all your directions, it appeared he also uninstalled it. I didn't get the last two popups shown in your message; the program ran without prompting from me.

So, without further ado, here's the log:

Yes, your fiance is right, there are still some traces on the machine. Combofix should be able to sweep those up.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the box below into it:

QUOTE
Folder::
c:\documents and settings\Compaq_Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\lihasjjxk

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5577

RegLock::
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1546177430-989802562-2716667836-1009\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID]

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as Comfix.exe (called ComboFix.exe in the below graphic)

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

I'll do that as quickly as possible...but yesterday I was having frequent crashes with an inability to reboot. Just a warning in case you don't hear from me as soon as either of us would like.

And, thanks, m0le, for doing this!

Kindest,

Elfie.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, huzzah, no crashes! I pride myself on not being a total techno-tard, but I have to say thank you for the really easy instructions. You've made this much easier on me than I expected.
Here's the log you asked for.
That looks fine.
Please run ESET's online scanner
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Leave the top box checked and then check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push
NOTE: If no malware is found then no log will be produced. Let me know if this is the case.
I've only had one crash since the last scan, and that can be attributed to sheer age. (As soon as I can afford one, this one will not be stressed so much.)
Otherwise, things are blissful.
Thank you so much, m0le!
Kindest,
Elfie
Good to hear, Elfpuddle. Please complete the fix by reading and actioning the information below.
You're clean. Good stuff! thumbup2.gif
Let's do some clearing up
Uninstall ComboFix
Remove Combofix now that we're done with it.
  • Please press the Windows Key and R on your keyboard. This will bring up the Run... command.
    (For Vista/Windows 7 please click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Run)
  • Now type in Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. (Notice the space between "Combofix" and "/")
  • Please follow the prompts to uninstall Combofix.
  • You will then receive a message saying Combofix was uninstalled successfully once it's done uninstalling itself.
This will uninstall Combofix and anything associated with it.
Download and Run OTC
We will now remove the tools we used during this fix using OTC.
  • Download OTC by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click icon to start the program. If you are using Vista, please right-click and choose run as administrator
  • Then Click the big button.
  • You will get a prompt saying "Being Cleanup Process". Please select Yes.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's some advice on how you can keep your PC clean
Use and update your AntiVirus Software
You must have a good antivirus. There are plenty to choose from but I personally recommend the free options of Avast and Avira Antivir. If you want to purchase a security program then I recommend any of the following: AVG, Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky and ESET Nod32.
It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. If you use a commercial antivirus program you must make sure you keep renewing your subscription. Otherwise, once your subscription runs out, you may not be able to update the programs virus definitions.
Make sure your applications have all of their updates
It is also possible for other programs on your computer to have security vulnerability that can allow malware to infect you. Therefore, it is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.
Install an AntiSpyware Program
A highly recommended AntiSpyware program is SuperAntiSpyware. You can download the free Home Version. or the Pro version for a 15 day trial period.
Installing this or another recommended program will provide spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should scan your computer with an AntiSpyware program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
Finally, here's a treasure trove of antivirus, antimalware and antispyware resources
That's it, happy surfing!
Cheers.
