Greetings, Blessed Helpers!

After removing rogue software using Malwarebytes, I was not able to use Orbit downloader nor watch streaming videos on my favorite site. I'm running Windows XP on a six year old Gateway laptop that has rarely had problems.

My friend advised me to install IE8. Here is what I did :

Installed IE8, still couldnt use media sites.
Tried to uninstall IE8-- woudn't uninstall
Uninstalled Windows Service Pack 3 on the advice of someone else.
IE8 still wouldn't uninstall. IE7 stopped working entirely.
Reinstalled Service Pack 3-- IE7 came back with same media problem.
Ran multiple System Restores during these efforts. No improvement.
Reinstalled Orbit.
At this point, the Google Redirect virus infected the machine.
Firefox stopped working.
AdAware and Malwareabytes didn't pick up the infection.
Upon rebooting, this window appeared, but not at every reboot:
apdproxy.exe Unable to locate component. This application failed to install because ConnAPI.DLL was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

I have no idea what to do next, other than buy a MAC, but that's an expensive fix.

Thank you for your attention; thanks for this site.
Mariella

Hi Mariella,

Welcome to Malware Removal (VTSMR) forum. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (scanning or running other tools, updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might interfere with our fixes. In case of making changes I shall assume my assistance is not needed any more.

If the issue is not resolved please update me on the current condition of your computer.

Good morning, farbar, and thank you for responding. The issue is not resolved, but I've refrained from trying to fix it since I submitted my logs. I've also refrained from doing Google searches so as not to experience the redirects. I haven't made any other changes, either.

My off-line programs work well; start-up and shut-down work well.

The only new problem I'm having is that my internet connection to this computer is unstable. My two other computers in the house are fine.

I await further instructions.

Thanks for the update.

Download http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/TDLfix.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable real-time protection of your security software and make sure it will not run at startup after reboot. They may otherwise interfere with the tool. (Information on A/V control HERE)
  • Close all the open windows.
  • Double-click TDLfix.exe to run the tool, a command window opens.
  • Type (or copy the following and right-click to paste) in the command window and press Enter:

    cdrom
  • The application shall restart the computer immediately and runs after restart.
  • Tell me if the computer rebooted and ran to completion.

I installed the TDLfix.exe file and followed your instructions. The computer shut down and rebooted fine. A blue window appeared, with the message, "This window will close shortly." It closed immediately, and nothing more happened.

The rootkit is taken care of. Let's take care of the rest.
  1. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.
Download JavaRa from Javara for Java update or directly from here.
Use the tool to remove old and redundant versions of the Java Runtime Environment. The latest version is Java 6 update 20. Please uninstall any remaining versions if the tool could not uninstall them (look for any entry on Add/Remove that contains Java, JRE or Java Run Time), they are:

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    Java™ 6 Update 17
    Java™ 6 Update 3
    Java™ 6 Update 5
    Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6
    Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

  2. Run CCleaner (make sure under Windows tab all the boxes of Internet Explorer and Windows explorer are checked. Under System check Empty Recycle Bin and Temporary Files. Under Application tab all the boxes should be checked). Then click run cleaner.

  3. Open your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
    • First update it, to do that under the Update tab press "Check for Updates".
    • Under Scanner tab select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy&Paste the MBAM log.

    Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

The system is running significantly faster. Orbit downloader now works but Firefox still does not. I presume I should now reactivate AdAware and reinstall Java, but I don't have more time for my computer now because I have to go to work. I'll check things out thoroughly tonight when I return, then I'll report back to you.

Can I save these instructions and use them again if the need arises?

Some instructions like running TDLFix is specific to the patched driver by the rootkit infection and could not be run unless you know the name of infected driver. The rest like running Malwarebytes, using CCleaner and updating Java are general and could be used always.

Install Java and check everything and let me know about it, then we round off or take care of any remaining issues.

I installed Java, did a few Google searches, shut-downs and start-ups, and everything behaved well! Firefox, however, still doesn't load at all, though it was working perfectly before the infections.

IE still looks weird-- the Google toolbar got deleted as well as something else, I don't know what-- but it works smoothly.

I still cannot watch streaming video from the Italian site RAI, as I used to before the infections. I don't know why. My other computer (exactly like the one that got infected) continues to work well with RAI.

I discovered that my Ad-Aware Pro license expired, though I thought I'd renewed it, so I was working with just the free version.

Those are the residual problems, minor in comparison to the original, but I'd still like to fix them, if only for the fun of it!

Thanks for the update.
  1. Run TDLfix, type del and press Enter. This will delete the quarantined infected file and mbr.exe. Delete the tool from your desktop.

  2. Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

    * IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

    • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with the tool. (Information on A/V control HERE)
    • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • You will get a warning about the not trusted download sites for ComboFix, click Yes.
    • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
    • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please copy and paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Wow, farbar, I thought we were almost finished! This next step will be interesting-- the big ComboFix! Today I have to go out of town, so I can't work on the computer until late tonight or tomorrow. I look forward to a complete recovery.
