What type of USB ports are these?

What is the difference between USB ports that have the solid square connector and onces that have the square connector with 4 pinholes? See pics for reference

USB-ESATA combo port?

USB-ESATA combo port?


Maybe... for some reason none of my USB devices work on the combo port and they all work find on the normal USB. I don't have any esata devices to test it out.
