I have a Toshiba Satellite L305 laptop, and last night it froze, and then continued to freeze after every attempt to restart it. It will load windows, then while the start-up programs are loading in the bottom right, it either freezes, black screens, or restarts, and pressing ctrl alt del does nothing what-so-ever, SO..I am having to run the computer in safe mode, that's the only way to get it to start up. I was looking through msconfig and found that i didn't know what "zeebei.exe" and "jswtrayutil" were, and also that it said the manufacturer for the program was unknown, so i decided to google them, and now i've found out that they're trojan/virus/worms or something to that effect...so i found this forum, and followed all of the steps and now i guess i will just post what i've come up with and hope that someone can help me out. I can only run my laptop in safe mode, and it will not load safe mode with networking, so i can't go online on it either. I'm using another pc, and had to download defogger, dds, and gmer, then transfer them to my laptop using a flash drive. So i hope that is enough information, and i'm hoping that someone can help me out. I've never really dealt with this kind of thing before, so what computer knowledge i do have, isn't of much help to me. Any help appreciated, thanks in advance to anyone that is willing to help me out. =)

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Re-opened per user request.

Hi and welcome to the Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum,

I am thcbytes and I am here to help you!

I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those I suggest to you while I am cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so I know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Please perform all steps in the order received and do not proceed if you need clarification.

Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems please stop and tell me about it. When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide you with detailed suggestions for prevention.

==========

Since you are unable to boot safe with net please continue to use the flashdrive method. Before you do we need to immunize your flashdrive so it does not infected your clean computer.

Do this on your clean computer 1st!!!!!!!

Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Hold down the Shift key when inserting the drive until Windows detects it to keep autorun.inf from executing if it is present.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: As part of its routine, Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that was plugged in when you ran it. Do not delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection by keeping the autorun file from being installed on the root drive and running other malicious files.

Alright, I started out first by trying to disable some of the shields...Problem is, none of my virus protection software will run, it tells me there are missing plug-ins and what-not if i try to run a scan. So i'm not sure if they're even running in the background. I opened AVG 8.0 which i had downloaded not too long ago because Avast (which is my normal virus protection) was not working at all because of the virus/malware or whatever it is, and I clicked tools then clicked advanced settings and it gives me an error msg "error during plugin loading" so...I'm not exactly sure what to do here. I'm guessing it isn't running at all, but not sure. So what do you advise I do from here? I also have Spybot Search & Destroy and ad-aware installed on my laptop. After I send this I will also try to disable those, but i have a feeling it will be somewhat the same as my problem w/ AVG and Avast, because I don't think either of those are running in the background either.

As i figured, neither Spybot S&D or Ad-Aware will even load, Spybot S&D right now is frozen in it's startup process. What is my next step to take?

Do this in safe mode and use a flash drive to transfer the application.

Download ComboFix and save it to your clean computers Desktop.
Transfer it to the sick computer by way of your flash drive.

Now please run ComboFix using these instructions:
  • Close all applications and windows (including this one) so that you have nothing open and are at your Desktop.
  • Go to Start -> Run...
  • Copy the entire contents inside the CODE box below (do NOT copy the word "CODE" from the CODE box!), and paste them into the empty "Open:" box provided:
    CODE
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\ComboFix.exe" /killall
  • It will prompt you to install the Recovery Console but you will be unable since you do not have an internet connection. That's alright. Proceed regardless.
  • Follow the prompts.
  • When finished, ComboFix shall produce a log for you (located at C:\ComboFix.txt). Post the entire contents of that report in your next reply.

Please try to boot normally and connect to the internet.

Success?

Do not have access to flash drive right at the moment. I'm going to keep this window and only this window open (also had an email window open, may have caused the freezing) so should i download that now then switch over to safemode and run it? i have windows loaded normally right now, so should i give it a shot on normal or do it in safemode?

Hold on. I thought you could only boot into safe mode without networking. If your in normal windows then please do this...

**Print this page or copy and paste it into notepad as we will kill our internet connection temporarily**

Download ComboFix from any of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
  • Click OK and follow the on-screen prompts. When you click Yes at the prompt to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, you will get the following prompt: "You do not appear to be connected to the internet. Kindly connect before clicking 'OK'". At that point, do NOT click OK yet, but instead, please do this:
    • Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet Connections -> Network Connections
    • Right-click your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection (if you are using dial-up), and left-click Repair
    • Once done, click Close and exit the Network Connections window.
  • Now click OK in order to let ComboFix download the Recovery Console.
  • When prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • When the RC is successfully installed, click Yes to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, ComboFix shall produce a log for you (located at C:\ComboFix.txt). Post the entire contents of that report in your next reply for further review, and so we may continue cleaning the system.

Is your computer a 64 bit version? CF is compatible with Vista not a 64 bit OS though.

Ok. Try this...

First right click and delete Combofix and Rootkit Unhooker.

Then..

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

NOTE: Before saving MBAM please rename it to thcbytes.exe then save it to your desktop.

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

If MBAM will not install, try renaming it this way.
  • Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file file and rename it to mysetup.exe.
  • Double-click on mysetup.exe to start the installation.
  • If that did not work, then try renaming and changing the file extension. <- click this link if you do not see the file extension
  • Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file, rename it to mysetup and change the .exe extension to .scr, .com, .pif, or .bat.
  • Then double-click on mysetup.scr (or whatever extension you renamed it) to begin installation.
If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files.
  • Right-click on mbam.exe, rename it to myscan.exe.
  • Double-click on myscan.exe to launch the program.
  • If that did not work, then try renaming and change the .exe extension in the same way as noted above.
  • Double-click on myscan.scr (or whatever extension you renamed it) to launch the program.
If using Windows Vista, refer to How to Change a File Extension in Windows Vista.
