Safe Mode problem led to running ComboFix relatively "unintentionally", have original ComboFix log, plus logs from DDS, GMER...

Okay.... Y'all get in a line, and I'll bend over so you can all give me a good hard kick in the butt.

Why gimme a kick?? Ummm... well.. you read the title of this, right? Yep, I did it. It started fairly innocently - I have had a problem for a six months or so where I can't use Safe Mode, because it just re-boots me before I can get past the user login screen. I came across some info a couple days ago about a file I have in my system, sptd.sys, that has been associated with causing this problem. Sptd.sys is a virtual disk driver that DaemonTools virtual CD player program uses.

I had uninstalled DaemonTools Lite and installed DT Pro/Standard right before I read this info about sptd.sys, so I promptly uninstalled the upgraded DT, disabled the sptd service, and deleted the file from system32\drivers folder. Unfortunately that didn't clear up my problem with Safe Mode rebooting Windows. I googled around some, and found references to two SafeBootKeyRepair programs - one by SubS, and one by Steelwerks. I came across the one by Steelwerks first and ran it, but it didn't fix the problem, so I kept looking and found another program for the same purpose by SubS, and ran that, but the problem persisted. In the course of looking for SafeBootKeyRepair I came across info about SubS' ComboFix program, and the fact that it would install the Recovery Console in XP Home. I had wanted to get the Recovery Console installed for a LONG time without being able to figure out how to do it, so I thought I'd take advantage of the information about having ComboFix install it, which I did, but then I ended up having ComboFix continue to run after installing Recovery Console. Ackkkkkkk..... Oh oh.......

Well, anyway, ComboFix ran, did it's thing, and now I think I need to undo some of what it did. I have a couple problems that are new, after running ComboFix. A weird one happens when I'm initially booting into my desktop. Either in the course of loading the desktop icons, or right after that, while the icons are loading in the system notification area, I get a dialog box with a title that says "Windows - No Disk!". The body of the dialog box says
" Exception Processing Message c0000013
Parameters 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c"
Three options are presented: "Try Again" "Continue", and "Cancel"
I tried "Try again", and that just brings the dialog back up.
"Continue" will dismiss the dialog. Right after hitting "Continue", my AnVir Taskmanager icons (which had uncharacteristically been absent from the notification area) finally loaded. They are usually one of the first things to load there, not the last, so that was pretty strange.
I should report that I haven't found any dire consequences of being unable to access my hard disk or anything that I'm aware of, but it's kind of un-nerving seeing that message pop up every time I boot. I suspect it may be an interaction with AnVir Task manager's initialization that has gone awry....

The second problem that I noticed is that the Links Toolbar in Internet Explorer no longer works correctly. When I click on a link, nothing happens. If I try to add a web site icon from the address bar to the links toolbar, I either get a message saying "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and has to close", or else IE just disappears from the screen all of a sudden, with no warning at all.

I would imagine I might also have some problems with a couple of my programs that I've found listed in the QooBox Quarantined Files list that are okay, as well (Antifreeze, a "last option" process terminator, also Avast's Self-Protection module, and a couple other things that I think are actually real, not malware).

Oh.. one thing I *DID* do was restore my original HOSTS file, as it was full of sites I want blocked. If there's a real good reason I should switch back to the replacement HOSTS file that ComboFix put there, please let me know.

So.... after getting myself into this mess I looked around for info on ComboFix and ended up here [again, I think - I was bouncing around to a bunch of various tech support sites all night], and read the many warnings in B-I-G letters, NOT to run ComboFix without proper supervision. Oops....

I have read through the steps to follow prior to submitting a request for assistance, ran DeFogger (it found no virtual CD drive drivers running), ran DDS and GMER and have the logs to those. I'm submitting the appropriate logs here with this message, but want to remind you that these logs were all obtained AFTER running ComboFix. I have the original ComboFix log also, if that would be useful, which I suspect it would be.

If someone can guide me in undoing some of the things ComboFix did with Avast and AntiFreeze, that would be great. I imagine I would run the .reg files to re-establish the deleted keys for those, and just return the quarantined .exe files to their original place after removing the .vir extension, but I will wait for further instructions.

If you see anything in the logs that points towards a solution to Safe Mode always rebooting, and the problems with IE, that would be great, as well.

Thank you so much for your time and attention to this mess. God (or whoever) bless y'all...

DDS.txt log follows, with DDS attach.txt and GMER ark.txt attached...

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

If I have been helping you and I do not reply within 48hours, feel free to send me a PM.

I do not accept personal donations for assistance provided. I would ask that you instead consider donating the greatest gift - Organ Donation. Your organs are of no use to you when your gone. You will save a life that would otherwise be lost!
