User clicked on a Facebook "You were tagged" link, and BAM! **Google Redirect**

I first thought it was a Smitfraud infection, so I ran Smitfraud Fix; it removed one file. However, the infection remained. Below find the logs for DDS, and MBAM (I only ran it, I did not have it remove the Koobface entries that it faound).

Hi,

Open your Internet Explorer...
In IE: Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" and check to "Automatically detect settings".
In Firefox in Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection.

Then, please update MalwareBytes, because the databaseversion is outdated.
  • Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
  • Once the updates are downloaded, perform a quick scan again.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log, then we'll proceed from there with new steps.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Hello miekiemoes smile.gif

I've studied many of your fixes in threads during my malware removal training, it's nice to finally meet you.
  • I cannot update MBAM, it gives an error each time.
  • I checked the IE proxy settings initially, they are already set to "automatically detect".
  • I went ahead and ran MBAM again and had it remove the "Koobface" infected files, then rebooted.
  • I ran HJT but discovered when I tried to post the log that v2.02 has been replaced by 2.04, so I will have to run the new version and post it later.

Here is the MBAM log:

Hi,

QUOTE
I checked the IE proxy settings initially, they are already set to "automatically detect".

But according to your log, there are still some proxyservers set there, so make sure those are cleared out from your proxysettings and then set to automatically.
Also, please check your PM because I'm going to send you the latest rules set for Malwarebytes to replace manually smile.gif

Then please post the new malwarebytes log in your next reply.

Hi miekiemoes smile.gif

Well, I did as you suggested, I installed the MBAM rules set, but I got an error when trying to run it. So, I uninstalled MBAM completely, and re-installed it. When it prompted to run the online update I decided to just give it a try, and lo and behold it worked! I went in and removed the proxy settings as you instructed, and then installed and ran the latest version of HJT.

Here are the logs:

Hi,

Please check and fix this entry in HijackThis as bearshare is not the recommended searchprovider:

Hi smile.gif
  • Entry removed with HJT
  • Updated and ran MBAM again just to check, and it did not find anything.
  • Updated to the latest version of SpywareBlaster.
  • Now here's where it got a little interesting, I went to javacools and downloaded SpywareGuard. When I attempted to install it, I got a message that stated that the install file was corrupted. I then typed "Spyware Guard" into a search, and scrolled down to the Download.com link, but when I clicked on it I was sent to a site that wanted me to download Stopzilla instead. At this point, I used ATF Cleaner to clean out all temp files, etc. Then I ran a search again, and chose the javacools link, then the Major Geeks download of SG (previously I downloaded straight from javacools). Everything went smoothly from there.
Here's the latest HJT:

Hi,

QUOTE
the Download.com link, but when I clicked on it I was sent to a site that wanted me to download Stopzilla instead
Yes, that happens once in a while on Download.com. Next time you may see another suggested program as well when you want to download something from there.

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!

Thank you very much for your help with this. I read through your Prevention page, and it looks as though she needs a software firewall in addition to what's there now, I will install one ASAP. Thank you again!

Best Regards,
