Hi all. You have in the past solved a few hijack problems.

I run Windows XP, almost exclusively using Firefox (occasionally IE for recalcitrant sites). I run Norton Anti virus and Norton Internet security. I recently ran both Adaware and Spybot.

I have 2 problems:
Continuous pop-ups re "Registry is corrupted" etc from 'reg32.com' etc etc
Another user on same computer is running e-mule (file-sharer) This seems to block/clog the modem - I have to reboot to use it again...
Any ideas? Here is the current log....
MANY THANKS for any help....

Hi David,

Download Shoot The Messenger, and run it. This will block the port that is used to spim you. On that same page you can read about spim.

You might want to save this page on your favorites, so you can find it again when you return. You can also click on your name and click on "Find All Posts" to find your thread.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked". Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Thank goodness for all the goodies, like you and Shoot the Messenger. Without you we'd all be most in the oceans of spam, pop ups and general bad stuuf. MANY THANKS.

Here is the new log. Are there any other useless bits I can safely get rid of ? automatic updates etc??

Thanks again for any help...

Yours, David.

Hi David Selig,

Sorry for the late reply. I just noticed that a view threads I am subscribed to didn't send emails to me... Yours was one of them.

This log looks clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Sygate Personal Firewall or Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....

I know one shouldn't reply to one's own message. HOwever, I've just had a very worrying e-mail re SPAM. I had opne e-mail "vlocked" to a regular correspondent at an educational institute (.edu...) Apparently my IP was lisetd as a purveyor of SPAM, on several listings. For one of these I was able to remove my IP address, but for others not able to - one was a paying service, another didn't work....

Is this a result of the same problems as you dealt with? Could it have happened while I switched off Norton in order to load up web pages to a FTP server??? Could it just be through security holes in Windows??? As I told you, I could not upgrade my WIndows XP to SP2 - the whole computer became a mess...

thanks for any help...
Yours, David.

Hi David Selig,

No... The reason I hadn't gotten any emails was that there was an update of the board software. That didn't preserve my settings, so I've been working a while "in the dark". I was already wondering why I got so few notifications though

Many ISPs think that holding back email based on the originatords address, so called blacklists, are a way to counter spam. Unfortunately that is usually not the case. I don't think you can actually fight that :flowers:
