Trying to fix up my gf's laptop (not the one I'm typing from). She mostly uses Firefox and experiences redirects on Google links, random pop-ups of Google's homepage as a new tab (without reason), and other browsing issues. Chrome does not work at all. I haven't tried searching on IE.

She's previously downloaded all sorts of flash games from Yahoo in the past and there's remnants of a lot of them even though they're no longer installed. I've deleted some of it, but decided to stop and get some real help.

Welcome to Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal (VTSMR) forum. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (scanning or running other tools, updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might interfere with our fixes. In case of making changes I shall assume my assistance is not needed any more.

Run GMER, uncheck all boxes but let the box next to Sections and C drive remain checked. Click Scan.
When it finished press Save to save the log and post it to your reply. It will not take more than a minute.

No need to run it again.
  1. Please run Notepad (start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad) and copy and paste the text in the code box (without the word CODE) into a new file:

    • Go to the File menu at the top of the Notepad and select Save as.
    • Select Save in: desktop
    • Fill in File name: fix.bat
    • Save as type: All file types (*.*)
    • Click save.
    • Close the Notepad.
    • Locate fix.bat on the desktop. It should look like this:
    • Double-click to run it.
    • A window flashes, this is normal.

  2. You have still some leftovers from an incomplete uninstalled Norton Antivirus on your computer.

    To remove the leftovers please download and run the Norton Removal Tool.

    Note: Norton removal tool is one and the same for all versions named below. It doesn't matter which version you have.

    Warning: The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products and Norton 360 from your computer. If you use ACT! or WinFAX, back up those databases before you proceed.

  3. We are going to run this special tool.
    • Please download TDSSKiller.exe and save it to your desktop.
    • Run TDSSKiller.exe.
    • When it finished press any key to continue.
    • Let reboot if needed and tell me if it needed a reboot.
    • Also it makes a txt file on the C:\ directory (like TDSSKiller.2.3.2.0_Date_Time_log.txt). Please attach it to your replay.

  4. Please run DDS and attach a fresh DDS.txt and the Attach.txt to your reply.

  1. You have the latest version of Java (Java 6 Update 20) and it is good. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.
    Please uninstall the following:

    Java™ 6 Update 2

  2. This small application you may want to keep and use to keep the computer clean.
    Download CCleaner from here http://www.ccleaner.com/
    • Run the installer to install the application.
    • When it gives you the option to install Yahoo toolbar uncheck the box next to it.
    • Run CCleaner. (make sure under Windows tab all the boxes of Internet Explorer and Windows explorer are checked. Under System check Empty Recycle Bin and Temporary Files. Under Application tab all the boxes should be checked).
    • Click Run Cleaner.
    • Close CCleaner.

  3. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these locations:
    malwarebytes.org
    majorgeeks.com
    • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy&Paste the MBAM log.

    Extra Note:
    If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediately.

Haven't used the computer a whole lot, but the Google issues certainly seem to be resolved.

So after using the computer for a while, it's initiated several auto-updates, for windows, office, and flash. I've proceeded with all of them...

Seems to be running okay (if not just slow, due to it's age).

The only real lingering issue I notice is that when trying to shut the computer down, a prompt is opened to end the process "sample" before the computer can actually shut down.

I can't seem to figure out what this references. None of the running processes jump out at me, none of the start-up programs seem to fit...

It is related to ZCfgSvc.exe and this is a description of the problem and the solution:

Zero Config MFC Application, part of Intel's ProSET utilities and installed by the drivers for many of Intel wireless network cards - essential to the proper functioning of many of the Intel ProSET utilities (but not all) and these System Tray ProSET utilities are a must if you are using your wireless connection, if only so you know when the signal is fading or dropping. The problem is that, in some PCs, ZCFGSVC can be incredibly badly behaved : taking up to 100% of CPU time and therefore resulting in an extremely slow PC, preventing the installation of software or Windows updates, or causing "Not Responding" or "End this Program" shutdown problems. If you experience this, try first the very latest drivers from Intel or your laptop manufacturer. If that still does not solve the problem and you have WinXP/2003, try setting the "Wireless Zero Configuration" service to disabled

So the first action is to update the Wireless driver.

  1. You may delete any tool or log we used from your computer.

  2. First Set a New Restore Point then Remove the Old Restore Points to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

    To set a new restore point:
    • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
    • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next".
    • Give the Restore Point a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.

    To remove the old restore points:
    • Go to Start > Run then type: Cleanmgr in the box and click "OK".
    • You get a window to select the drive to clean, the default is already set to (C:) drive. Click OK.
    • Click the "More Options" Tab.
    • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
    • Click OK and Yes.


Recommendations:
  1. I recommend using Site Advisor for safe surfing. It is a free extension both for Internet Explorer and Firefox. When you search a site it gives you an indication of how safe a site is.

  2. I recommend installing this small application for safe surfing: Javacoolsİ SpywareBlaster
    SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
    • Download and install it.
    • Update it manually by clicking on Updates in the left pane and then Check for Updates.
    • Then enable all the protections by clicking on Protection Status on the left pane. Then click on Enable All Protection.
    • The free version doesn't have an automatic update. Update it once in two or three weeks and enable all protection again.
