Hi I am having a problem not being able to access windows update.

I have done the usual AVG, Spybot and AdAware scans which show up nothing

I have downloaded Microsoft secutiy essentials which also found nothing and this will not update either (800073efe error)

from the posts already here I figure I have a Rootkit infection

I would appreciate your help

Julian

Do AVG, SpyBot and AdAware update properly, or at least appear to?

Try running Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, it can be downloaded from here. Be sure to run the full scan in safe mode.

Hmm...well try running McAfee Stinger and Super Anti-Spyware. Stinger is nothing more than an .exe file, it's completely stand-alone and needs no updating, just save it to the desktop and run it in safe mode. Run Super Anti-Spyware in safe mode too, of course.

If both of those come up blank I'd say it's unlikely (though not impossible) that you're infected. Any other symptoms of possible infection? Any slow web browsing, slow program starting, long restart time, hard drive accessing data for no apparent reason? Any problems downloading from sites other than Microsoft?

Windows Update uses IE. Has IE been updated lately? I would uninstall it and install it again or an older version.
