Hi! This is my first time posting to these forums, I will attempt to follow the recommended protocol as best I can. Thanks in advance for your help! The computer I am working with has been pulling down a LOT of trojan horse style malware. Te first indication of this problem that I had was that the user noticed Outlook ran exceedingly slow. Often during receipt of email or review of received emails he would receive a warning "Could Not load Symantec Outlook Add-IN." Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 is installed on this machine, and it found upwards of 2000 infected tmp files at one point. I have run Malwarebytes and Symantec, and tried to run Lavasoft's Ad-Aware. I am strongly considering a re-install of XP at this point but thought I might ask this group what they thought.

Hello DoublePanic,

Well then, since you've done all those other things and it's still bad, let's see what this will show us:

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

** Uninstall AdAware temporarily. Sometimes even when it's disabled it interferes, especially when there is a reboot involved.

Thanks,
tea

Teacup thank you so much for getting back with me. I won't be able to run the combofix until tomorrow, but will get back with you as soon as I am able.

Very gratefully,

DoublePanic

Teacup

I ran combofix twice, because the first time I did not have an internet connection to the machine to download the Recovery Console. On the second run, i had it connected so it did download the Recovery Console.

Attached please find the 2 logs from each of the times I ran it?

Thank you,

DoublePanic

Hello there,

How is it running after that?

I don't see any sign of a rootkit. The sectors that say rootkit like behavior in the gmer log are benign. If it were a rootkit it would say ROOTKIT!!! out to the side of sector 0. Also, there was nothing saying rootkit in the ComboFix log.

Let me know how it's running and we'll go from there. thumbup2.gif

Thanks,
tea
