Hi All! I'm at a loss here and was hoping I can get some expert help here!

About 2 weeks ago, my Google Chrome browser stopped working (Chrome would load, but page would be blank. After a while the "page is not responding" box would pop-up and ask if I want to "kill page" or "wait" --> Nothing would happen either way) I have to resort to closing Chrome and using IE. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program, but would result in the same issues.

In any case, I have downloaded IE 8 and started using that about 1 week ago (not sure if that was the cause to my current perpetuating issues). All my searches will be re-directed (search engine neutral, doesn't matter if I'm using Google or Yahoo) to websites like news-11today.com or some insurance website etc. Pop-ups to those ad websites would start appearing as well once I launch my IE browser.

I have downloaded McAfee, Ad-Aware, Hitman Pro, Malware Bytes and ran hours and hours of scan. Ad-Aware was able to catch a couple of trojans / spyware after deep scan, but all my issues would return upon reboot. Needless to say, McAfee didn't turn up anything (what a waste of money). Hitman Pro didn't catch anything either.

Regardless, this nasty whatever it is would not go away. PLEASE HELP and I'm a total computer idiot, so whatever you need me to do, step by step instructions would be appreciated  !

PS: Not sure if this is at all related to my "infection", but when I startup my laptop, these dialog boxes would appear
1. vstskmgr.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close
2. Network associates error reporting service - 1 unhandled error ...
3. Could not access local server

PPS. I'm on MS Windows XP

Did Malwarebytes find anything?

Hi! Everything ran fine and I restarted. It seems to have only found 1 infected file / folder (1/0/1)?

According to the instructions to the link, I'm suppose to run Malware Bytes to clean up any residual files. Full scan will most definitely take a couple of hours - shall I post log after to see if any turns up?

Anything else I should do? Thank you so much for your help.

Am I celebrating too soon? How can I make sure no backdoor trojans  are tracking my key-strokes and stealing passwords etc?

Wanted to give an update:

1. I redownloaded Google Chrome and it's now working! Looks like whatever hi-jacked my program is gone... Fingers crossed.
2. These messages still appear when I start-up my laptop, not sure if it's a security threat

i) vstskmgr.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close
ii) Network associates error reporting service - 1 unhandled error ...
iii) Could not access local server

3. New message popped up when I shut down

"tsrstraywnd has encountered a program and needs to close"

Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If it will not start, go to Start > All Prgrams > SUPERAntiSpyware and click on Alternate Start.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.
If you have a problem downloading, installing or getting SAS to run, try downloading and using the SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner instead. Save the randomly named file (i.e. SAS_1710895.COM) to a usb drive or CD and transfer to the infected computer. Then double-click on it to launch and scan. The file is randomly named to help keep malware from blocking the scanner.

How's your computer running now?
The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who haven't got it.

Hello!

Browser is working great (both IE and Chrome) and fast with no redirects on my searches. Seems like all is good?
I have Ad Aware, Malwarebytes, Super antispy, hitman Pro, and Mcafee on my computer and will run updates / scans on a frequent basis. Anything else I can do to make sure all trojans are eradicated?

When I start up, these messages still pop-up:

i) vstskmgr.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close
ii) Network associates error reporting service - 1 unhandled error ...
iii) Could not access local server
