This problem began during a virus infection that, with the expert help of boopme on the malware forum, has been resolved. He/she advised me to start a new topic in this forum to see if anyone can help.

In Outlook, Excel and Word (all 2003), when I click on a clickable link, the following error message comes up: "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

Does someone have an idea what is going on here?

Hi lingle873333

Try setting IE as your default browser.

1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools > Internet Options.
2. Click the Programs tab.
3. Click the Make Default button.
4. Click OK.

Now see if your clickable links work again.

Those clickable links should open in Internet Explorer. Malware often messes around with Internet Explorer's settings, so it might be worth trying a full reset.

Instructions are here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

If you try it, make sure IE is your default browser afterwards.

Does this mean (assuming that this resolves the issue) that I'm stuck with IE forever and ever?

I think you can use any browser you like afterwards. What browser did the clickable links open before in you had the problem?

Also some good info here:
