I just removed the AV Security Suite malware, using the process here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo...-security-suite. After running Malwarebytes and restarting in normal mode, I tried to access the internet again, but was unable to. Firefox came up with a screen that said:

The proxy server is refusing connections

Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.

* Check the proxy settings to make sure that they are correct.

* Contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is

I went to the Internet options and changed the proxy settings from Manual Proxy configuration to No Proxy and was able to connect to websites again. I did the same thing with Chrome and it also worked. Does this mean that there is something still wrong with the computer? If not, can I continue to surf safely without using a Proxy?

A proxy server is a middle-man server. All your data goes through it. You connect to proxy server which connects you to the internet. Some malware programs use such proxy servers to trap all your sensitive data.

It is good that you have removed these proxy servers. The internet access is faster and safer without using any proxy servers. You should change your various accounts passwords and password recovery options.
