Hello,
This is my first post so please be gentle. I've had a recent increase in the number and severity of malware problems so I thought I would finally ask for some help. I've had the "Internet Security 2010" rogue problem several times before but Malwarebytes always seemed to fix it. Until this last time, I still get the "you computer had become infected..." messages in the corner of the screen. Also I have noticed that while browsing a new window will open automatically (usually to www.google.com/webhp). In addition if I use the firefox search bar the links are all redirected to various search or marketing sites. I'm not sure where to start here, I run all free anti-malware programs (Avast, Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, advanced system care) but none of them seem to entirely remove the problem. I have attached a hijackthis log. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit

This could allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC could be compromised and there is no way to be sure that your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

hmm. In that case I will probably just reformat my pc. 2 questions though.

-Is there any software that can prevent this type of infection in the future or am I just better off not running as an admin and being more careful?
-does this malware only reside in registry files? Would it be safe to copy some pictures/files onto a flash drive without bringing the infection along too?

Greetings

Would it be safe to copy some pictures/files onto a flash drive without bringing the infection along too? with this infection, yes it would be ok

Is there any software that can prevent this type of infection in the future or am I just better off not running as an admin and being more careful? Nothing is perfect it is just being carefull and know where you are going and then it still may not be enough

Here is part of my all clean that may help some after you have reformated the drive

:Make your Internet Explorer more secure:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

:Make Firefox more secure:

:Turn On Automatic Updates:
    Turn On Automatic Updates
    1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
    2. Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them

If you click this setting, click to select the day and time for scheduled updates to occur. You can schedule Automatic Updates for any time of day. Remember, your computer must be on at the scheduled time for updates to be installed. After you set this option, Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to find updates on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site that apply to your computer. Updates are downloaded automatically in the background, and you are not notified or interrupted during this process. An icon appears in the notification area of your taskbar when the updates are being downloaded. You can point to the icon to view the download status. To pause or to resume the download, right-click the icon, and then click Pause or Resume. When the download is completed, another message appears in the notification area so that you can review the updates that are scheduled for installation. If you choose not to install at that time, Windows starts the installation on your set schedule.

or visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

:antispyware programs:

I would reccomend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly:
  • WinPatrol As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge.
  • Spyware Blaster - By altering your registry, this program stops harmful sites from installing things like ActiveX Controls on your machines.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. We used this to help clean your computer and recomend keeping it and useing often.

please read this great article by miekiemoes How to prevent Malware:
and

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can then be closed.

Greetings

These logs look good - so this time it has to be the router

Resetting Router

Letís try to reset the router to its default configuration.
  • This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router.
  • Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds).
  • If you donít know the router's default password, you can look it up. Here
  • You also need to reconfigure any security settings you had in place prior to the reset.
  • You may also need to consult with your Internet service provider to find out which DNS servers your network should be using or you can use OpenDNS

Note: After resetting your router, it is important to set a non-default password, and if possible, username, on the router. This will assist in eliminating the possibility of the router being hijacked again.

I don't have a router. I'm plugged into a cable modem. I just tried a few google searches using the firefox search bar and it appears that I am no longer being redirected. Also I have not seen the popups in over 2 days. So did my computer miraculously heal itself!?

The redirect was mostly happening when i used the firefox search bar. I just stopped using the search bar and going straight to google instead, so I haven't seen a redirect for several days (but it was still happening after I reformatted).
The popups would usually open a new tab in firefox then a message box saying something like "your a winner" and then when I try to close the box (via the X in the corner) I would get a "are you sure?" message, then you would have to click "OK" to close the box. I have not seen them in several days either.
