I'm trying to install the AC'97 audio driver on an older pc running Windows 98SE. The driver installs but it doesn't work. I get this error in device manager. I downloaded the driver from here. I downloaded the A4.06 version. I have the latest direct x installed as well so it can't be that. What do I need to get this to work?

I have DirectX 9.0c installed.

Yes but which version, which monthly update?

Even though it says the DirectX 9.0c is suitable for all version of Windows its not I can assure you.

The last version that worked on Win98/ME is DirectX 9.0c (Aug 07)

I'm not saying this is your problem as you can't get the AC'97 audio drivers to work. Make sure the drivers you try are compatible with Win98?

Did you download the right driver for your RealTek High Definition Audio? What sound card do you have?
