I have had this machine for a long time and my kids, neighbors etc have used it and they seem quite content installing and clicking everything they see. I am constantly removing viruses etc but now the machine is really slow. It crashes frequently where it won't recognize any exe. When it starts up I need to manually start the DHCP service in order to get the internet connection even though it is set to automatic. I ran a Hijack this log and it is as follows. My wife wants to buy a new machine but I cant afford that. Thanks in advance.

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  2. Do not Attach logs unless I ask you to.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.
  6. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

I had to kill a svchost process that was killing my machine to complete the defogger job
This results in an error window popping up periodically saying it can't run the svchost thing.

When I ran the dds.scr I get the command prompt but after a minute it disappears and there are no log files.

I ran the unhooker and exe. I got the svchost error message and then the rkUnhooker was unresponsive, though taking up 50% of cpu. I tried to kill the process but it says permission denied.. Should I reboot and try all over?

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit

This could allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC could be compromised and there is no way to be sure that your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

I attempted to run combo fix. I disabled my antivirus and firewall software (PCTools - Spyware Doctor and Comodo). However when I ran combo fix it kept telling me McAfee was running which I uninstalled years ago. I have no idea what could be running from McAfee.

I continued on anyways and it couldn't do the recovery console but still ran. It asked to restart my computer and I did. There is no log file but I can tell that the task bar looks better.

Should I re-enable firewall and antivirus or should I run combo fix again to get a log file? Start all over from the defogger?

Thank you so much.

Josh

Greetings

Lets get rid of all of Mcafee first

:remove Macafee:

Note : You should first attempt to remove your McAfee consumer products using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel (Programs and Features, in Windows Vista). This is the best method. After uninstalling using Windows Add/Remove Programs, run the McAfee Consumer Removal Tool (MCPR.EXE) to ensure successful removal of all McAfee references.

Download the removal tool from:

http://download.mcafee.com/products/licens...atches/MCPR.exe
  • Click Save and save the file to any folder on your computer.
  • Navigate to the folder where the file is saved.
  • Make sure all McAfee windows are closed.
  • Double-click MCPR.EXE to run the removal tool.
    • Note: Windows Vista users must right-click MCPR.EXE and select Run as Administrator.
  • Restart your computer after receiving the message CleanUp Successful.

Now I would like you to do this

TDSSKiller:
  • Please Download TDSSKiller.zip and save it on your desktop.
  • extract (unzip) its contents to your Desktop.
  • double-click the TDSSKiller Folder on your desktop.
  • right-click on TDSSKiller.exe and click Copy then Paste it directly on to your Desktop.
  • Highlight and copy the text in the codebox below.
CODE
"%userprofile%\desktop\tdsskiller.exe" -l "%userprofile%\desktop\tdsskiller.txt"
  • Click Start, click Run... and paste the text above into the Open: line and click OK.
  • If malicious services or files have been detected, the utility will prompt to reboot the PC in order to complete the disinfection procedure. Please reboot when prompted.
  • After reboot, the driver will delete malicious registry keys and files as well as remove itself from the services list.
  • a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller 2.1.1 Dec 20 2009 02:40:02
  • To find the log click Start then Computer then Vista ( C:).
  • Please post the contents of that log in your next reply

I ran the McAfee removal tool and the computer rebooted.

I ran the other tool (TDSSKiller) and the black command window said 0/0/0 for registry files corrupted, infected ect and did not ask to reboot.

Note: There is no log file but on my C: drive I did get 2 new files from 10 minutes ago.
hiberfil.sys
pagefile.sys

Both are pretty big

Hello

Looks like we are going to have to go back to combofix

First we are going to have to uninstall comodo, it does not like combofix and has caused problems when running it for a long time ( we can reinstall it after we are done )

after you have done that update combofix

update combofix

I would like you to download an updated virsion of combofix.
Delete the version of combofix you have now on your desktop and download a new one from here

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

    1. Close any open browsers.
    2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note:Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

ìf we still have problems running it then we will try safe mode but let me know if this works first

make sure PC tools is disable also

Greetings

Good that got rid of some nasty'e

I would like to get an extra report from combofix.

extra combofix report

I need to see one of the extra reports combofix makes
  • push the "windows key" + "R" (between the "Ctrl" button and "Alt" Button)
  • please copy and past the following into the box
CODE
C:\Qoobox\Add-Remove Programs.txt
  • click ok
  • copy and paste the report into this topic for me to review

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. extra report from combofix
    2. report From MBAM
    3. let me know of any problems you may have had
    4. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo
