I think I have a fake copy of Windows XP. The plan was, to buy a real copy of whatever, next week when my friendly local computer shop man returns from holiday. I switched my PC on today though and I have a black screen with no icons. Neither do I have a taskbar.
If anyone could advise me as to how to get them back I'd be very grateful. If it can't be done..... How do I go about installing real Windows and uninstalling the fake next week?

Considering that it currently must be deemed "illegal" by your statements...it's unlikely that anyone here will be able to assist you.

Best advice I can give you...speed up your timetable, buy a legit license...do a clean install.

"No subject matter will be allowed whose purpose is to defeat existing copyright or security measures. If a user persists and/or the activity is obviously illegal the staff reserves the right to remove such content and/or ban the user. This would also mean encouraging the use or continued use of pirated software is not permitted, and subject to the same consequences."

Axsolutely understood and fair enough. When I do though, will the fake Windows interfere with/infect my proper one?

It can't interfere...if you do a clean install.

A clean install involves (deleting existing partition) and creating a new one, in your case.

Since it's my opinion that much illegal software contains malware...deleting your current partition seems a must.

When you get your legit copy of Windows do a complete format of the drive during install, and your illegal version of Windows will be completely gone.
