I could use some help with an infected XP system. Several logs (of those diagnostics which I could get to run) are attached. (An on-line Kapersky scan reveals
C:\Documents and Settings\JLR\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\34\522055e2-7d6183d3 Infected: Trojan-Downloader.Java.Agent.ao 1)

I knew when attempts to use Micosoft update were being blocked (Error number: 0x80072EFF) there was something wrong. Also started getting pop-ups of free scanning services, the usual culprits. Tried running ComboFix (yeah, I know, I know) but it never finishes and the system just hangs. MS installed won't load a licensed, downloaded NOD32 v4. So I loaded NOD32 v3 from CD, which runs, but doesn't seem to snag the source of the malware / trojan. These things have gotten pretty sinister it seems. Any help is appreciated.
Best...John

Gringo - I am providing the flies as attachments as it seems the length of the reply with all the logs in clear text is causing IE to consistently generate an error

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Gringo, something rather strange is happening. ComboFix downloads and after I kick it off it gets as far as the screen which says "Scanning for infected files", but the disk activity light gradually goes down to no blinking and it appears nothing is happening. The program never gets to Phase 1 of the many phases it typically runs.
Another thing, when I browse "My Computer" and expand Local Disk C:, there appears a "comboFix" directory with the same icon as that of My Computer. Nested in that Directory is an identical set of icons as that in the main "My Computer" with yet another nest of the aforementioned ComboFix directory. Cliking on that one reveals, another nest , etc, . It's as if the program keeps creating recursive subdirectories.
Right now, it looks like it's hung. Mouse reponds, but program still hasn't gotten to Phase one.

I also noticed that lately when the machine is rebooted, the "Select Operating System" screen comes up twice to start XP.
Suggestions ?

Gringo, after reboot, the system is now signaling updates are ready - something not seen for some time. Something it fixes so far have restored that function. There's quite a list of updates pending. I will await your instructions..

Greetings

hold up on the updates and try to run combofix again

update combofix

I would like you to download an updated virsion of combofix.
Delete the version of combofix you have now on your desktop and download a new one from here

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

    1. Close any open browsers.
    2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note:Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

let me have this report when complete

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
Folder::
c:\documents and settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\xsnjjoeqv

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

NOTE**
  • When ComboFix finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will upload files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. report from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Gringo
