Hello,

Iím having some issues with a worm on my computer. Iíve been noticing the three following problems.

1) Spam emails are being sent from my account which reads the following:

hi . dear
I bought one white apple iphone 3gs from this website († oatrfu.com† )to my surprise! it's genuine. much cheaper. You can check it! Hope all is going well for you.!!!!

Jon

2) Pop-ups come up a few times per browsing session. Nothing excessive, just annoying. The last one was from www.google.com/webhp, but thereís many more.

3) Iím having difficulties sending emails. After I click send, it has a connection error. This has only happened within the last week or so.

Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Below is my DDS log and attached are the Attach and GMER report

Thanks in advance,
Jon

Hi DaBiz,

Welcome to Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal (VTSMR) forum. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (scanning or running other tools, updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might interfere with our fixes.
  1. Open your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
    • First update it, to do that under the Update tab press "Check for Updates".
    • Under Scanner tab select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy&Paste the MBAM log.

    Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

  2. Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

    * IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

    • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with the tool. (Information on A/V control HERE)
    • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • You will get a warning about the not trusted download sites for ComboFix, click Yes.
    • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
    • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please copy and paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Alright, I've done the Malawarebytes and the ComboFix. Everything seems to be running well!

I've pasted the logs for both below.

Thanks so much for the help!

Well done and you are welcome Jon.

It looks good and you are good to go. thumbup2.gif

Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programs. These programs allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."
  1. Open a notepad (Start > Run and type in Notepad )

Copy and paste the text in code box into it.

    CODE
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
    "DisableMonitoring"=dword:0

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring]
    "DisableMonitoring"=dword:0

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecAntiVirus]
    "DisableMonitoring"=dword:0

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecFirewall]
    "DisableMonitoring"=dword:0

    • Save the file to the desktop as regfix.reg
    • Make sure the Save as type field says All files.
    • Locate regfix.reg on the desktop and double-click on it and confirm. It should look like
    • A window pops up asking if you are sure to add the file to the registry. Click Yes.
    • You get another window popup saying that regfix.reg successfully added to the registry.

Note: You have to turn off any registry protector software you have in order the changes to be taken place.

  2. You have the latest version of Java (Java 6 Update 20) and it is good. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.
    Please unisntall the following:

    Java™ 6 Update 6
    Java™ 6 Update 7

  3. I see on the log Ask Toolbar is installed on your computer.

This program is known to be bundled with adware/spyware. You may read more about Ask Toolbars here:
    http://www.benedelman.org/spyware/ask-toolbars/

You may consider to uninstall Ask Toolbar by uninstalling:

    Ask Toolbar or Vuze toolbar

Also remove the folder in bold (if present) only after uninstalling Ask Toolbar:
    C:\Program Files\AskBar
    c:\program files\askbardis

  4. It is important to uninstall ComboFix.

Go to Start => Run => copy and paste next command in the field then hit enter:

    ComboFix /Uninstall

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

It makes a clean Restore Point and clears all the old restore points in order to prevent possible reinfection from an old one through system restore.

  5. You may delete the logs we used from your computer.

Happy Surfing Jon. smile.gif

Alright, regfix has been added, java updates 6&7 are uninstalled along with the Vuze toolbar and Combofix.

I think that's everything! One quick question. I'm assuming i can delete that reg file from the desktop now that those files items have been added?

Thanks so much for the help! Hope you enjoyed that Dutch victory this morning. I was hoping for a little more from Van Persie, but a wins a win!

Yes you may delete the regfix, some settings were added to the security center in order not to give notifications and we have set them again to their default.

And yes everybody expected more from the Dutch team. I was working at the time though.

You are most welcome. smile.gif
